On June 18, 1778, deed from Mary McIndree, relic of James McIndree, dec'd, William Hunt and Dorothy, his wife, Nipper Adams and Lucy, his wife, and Stephen Collins and Katherine„ his wife, to Mark Milner of Halifax County, for 60 Pounds, 140.75 acres, being a third part of 422.25 acres (formerly the property of James McIndree, dec'd), lying in Halifax on the North side of Banister River. The 140.75 acre tract is bounded by the old survey, the yellow bank Branch. Signed: Mary Mcntee, William Hunt, Dorothy Hunt, Nipper Adams, Lucy Adams, Stephen Collins; Catron Colins. Witnesses: John Milner, William Sydnor, John Pankey; rec. July 16, 1778 (Halifax Deed Bk 11, p. 74).
In the fall of 1779, Stephen Collins, his wife Catherine, and their two sons, Joel and Josiah, ages 7 and 1, left Virginia and during the winter months traveled over the Wilderness Road to Kentucky. His kinsman, Lewis Collins, in his History of Kentucky, described this as "The Hard Winter". p 55[1]
