Biography

Velnetta Collins was born on August 27, 1867 in Barnett’s Creek, Johnson County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of George Collins and Lydia Collins.

She was the paternal granddaughter of David Collins and Mary “Polly” Dale and maternal granddaughter of Joshua Lee Collins and Elizabeth Dale.

There are discrepancies regarding ethnicity. Census data shows that she was listed as Indian in 1870, "Mulatto" in 1880 and white in 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940.

Velnetta was the widow of Preston Hall (son of Nimrod Hall Sr. and Mary “Polly” Sturgill) whom she married on May 8, 1893 in Johnson County, Kentucky. She was the mother of Maude Hall McCarty, George W. Hall, Miles I. Hall and Nancy Elizabeth Hall.

Velnetta was indicted on May 18, 1893, ten days after her wedding, in Johnson County Circuit Court, Paintsville, Kentucky for fornication. She was only fifteen years of age. Her husband Preston Hall was indicted on the same day for adultery.

She was found guilty on August 31, 1893 for breach of peace and fined one dollar (the equivalent of $33.79 in 2023) in Johnson County Circuit Court, Paintsville, Kentucky. She was only fifteen years of age.

She was the wife of Fred Gullett whom she married on August 14, 1926 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky.

On February 12, 1955, Velnetta passed away twelve hours after her shawl caught fire from a stove in her home and fifty percent of her upper body was burned. She was eighty-seven years of age.
