The COLLINS, NOBLITTS, LUNDY'S SOUTHS, NUKOLLS, CONELY, and COX, Affiliated FAMILIES: The following Grays County, Virginia - New River Notes - Transcribed Court proceedings were selected as important content because in some instances the Collins, Noblitt, Lundy, Conley, South, and Nuckolls men identified by name and as serving the Court in various capacities - captured in these records (at times several at the same event and occasion): i.e., as jurymen serving the same Trial....or as parties in a Court witnessed transaction - i.e.: the surrender of Deed per agreement or subsequent purchase (at least one instance of a Deed passing hands between William Henry Conely and Mahlon Thomas ...and in a couple instances where one (or more) of the H.O.H. is actually being "Called Out" for a misdemeanor offense committed while the court was in recess (a couple Noblitt and Collins men find themselves on the wrong end of the Courts scrutiny for engaging(by our standards today would amount roughly to a charge of Disorderly Conduct with Disturbance of the Peace). The point is not to exhibit content where someone is shown in an embarrassing moment - but rather as a very forum where several Household Heads from Affiliated Families - many of which shared a migratory trajectory with the Collins and Noblitt's Families from North Carolina into Virginia; and then from Virginia into Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri.

THE NEW RIVER NOTES http://www.newrivernotes.com/historical_index.htm Grayson County, Virginia Personal Property Tax List:
Introduction
The 1810 Grayson County Tax List, presented on the following pages is issued as the best substitute available for the 1810 Federal Census. Grayson County, and a number of other counties lost their earliest census records when the British burned Washington in 1814, during the War of 1812.
This abstract of 901 entries was made from original records held by the Virginia State Library and Archives, Richmond, Virginia. Some names are questionable, and if any doubt exists about someone, these records should be consulted. Also, please note that some of those listed in this tax list may have actually lived Ashe County, North Carolina. The border between the Old Dominion and the Old North State was not well defined at its western terminus. Such being the case, some people who lived near the border thought themselves to be in one state, when they were actually in the other.
In 1810, Grayson County encompassed its present territory as well as most of what is now Carroll County a total of about 1000 square miles. Carroll County was established in 1842 from the Eastern District of Grayson plus a small portion of Patrick County.

1800 GRAYSON COUNTY, VIRGINIA PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LIST Since most of the 1800 Grayson County census was burned in 1814, tax lists are about the only way to obtain similar data. This record, taken from information on file in Library of Virginia does that to some degree. The first column is the tax payer, presumably the same as the head of the household. The next column is the number of white males over age 21. The third column is the number of horses owned. The next column lists the number of slaves over age 16, and the last column lists the number of slaves between 12 and 16 years of age. If no number is shown it should be assumed to be zero.

" MAHLON and PHOEBE COLLINS FAMILY 1777 to 1980 "
PREFACE
In writing this little genealogy of the Mahlon & Phoebe Collins family, we realize that is not perfect, errors will be found, omissions will occur. We have spent a lot of time in courthouses, libraries and old cemeteries, exchanged letters with the family and friends of the family and tried to get it as accurate as possible, but we know there will be mistakes, so please bear with us.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
To all those (too numerous to mention) that have given information and pictures on the Collins family, we are most grateful. We especially want to thank Mr. Robert C. Collins of Denver Colorado (Bob and my Dad were 1st cousins) who gave us so much information and furnished the majority of the pictures for this book. Without his help we would not have undertaken this task.
MAHLON COLLINS son of JONAHAN COLLINS born in Sussex Co, New Jersey 1756 (I believe he was born in 1750, his gravestone states that he died Oct. 30, 1834 at age 84) died in Lawrence Co, Indiana 1834, his wife PHOEBE __? (I believe her last name was WEBSTER) born 1758 died 1841. They are buried in Lawrence County, Indiana: They married in Hunterdon County, New Jersey on Oct. 10, 1776. Mahlon & Phoebe had 8 children that we can identify. [NOTE INSERTION: While the aforementioned marriage record clearly denotes Mahlon's name as the cited Party being married....No name or mark appears for Phoebe. I think I know why. An identical absence of brides names likewise is evident on the record of marriage for ANN COLLINS and AMOS LUNDY
Mahlon Collins was a member of the Friends, (better known as Quakers), church in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Mahlon was a member of the Kingwood Monthly Meeting of Friends in Hunterdon CO. Apparently, his wife was not a member as there is no mention of her in any of the Friends' records. He received a certificate of removal from Quakertown, NY MM to Deep River, Guilford Co, NC 10, 5, 1787. He was accepted on this certificate 17 Jan. 1788, but when he later requested a certificate to Westfield Monthly Meeting in Surrey Co, NC (now Yadkin Co)there was a complaint that he allowed "fidling and daunceling" in his house and he was finally disowned 18 May 1799. Sometime during these years, he moved across the line into Grayson Co, VA, which would still have been in Westfield MM (Chestnut Creek Preparative Meeting) and was a branch of the Westfield Friends, but located near Galax, Virginia. He later lived in the Baywood, Virginia area where he owned several tracts of land and also owned two tracts of land in Wayne County, Kentucky. From 1807 on for a number of years he appears in the Grayson Co., VA court records as juryman, etc. In one instance, he proved he bought 460 acres from Moses Foley before 1 June 1812. In 1830, Mahlon and Phoebe sold the Virginia land and their son Randolph moved them by team and wagon to Lawrence County, IN, for which Randolph received a fee of $75.00. Mahlon bought land from the government. Mahlon only lived a few years after this and when his estate was settled in 1834, Jacob Noblett, a son-in-law, was appointed administrator 20 Nov. 1834. William Connelly, who seems in some way to be connected to the family, was reimbursed for services for "collecting and fetching out from Virginia" and for planks, nails and paint for Mahlon's coffin. (my note-Mahlon's son John married Effie Connelly or Conley). Phebe acknowledged receipt of dowry 13 Dec. 1834. The estate of Mahlon's wife Phebe Collins was settled in 1841. She appears in the 1840 Lawrence Co., IN census. Her son Isaac, applied for reimbursement for "keeping her 3 years and 8 months, five months of which she was confined to bed". John Collins son of Mahlon and Phoebe Collins born 1777 in NJ died 1858 in Grayson Co, VA, married Effie Conley born 1775 died before 1830. We think they were buried in the old cemetery where Mahlon & Phoebe are buried (I believe this to be in error as Mahlon and Phoebe are buried in Indiana) as there are 2 graves that that are unaccounted for and from the records in Grayson Co we find they owned land near this old cemetery. The Grayson Co census show John Collins with 4 sons and 2 daughters, evidently one daughter died young as we can only account for 4 sons and 1 daughter, they were as follows.

Discussions and Notes/Research and Reference
A google search says Mahlon Collins belonged to Quakertown Monthly Meeting. I have a copy of a history of Quakertown Monthly Meeting and don't see a reference to any Collins. If Mahlon was a member of Quakertown MM I have a few suggestions. Ed Stout wrote a book called "Facts and Fantasies of Franklin" which is the history of Franklin Township. You might be able to get this through an interlibrary loan. He also wrote a pamphlet called "A brief history of the Friends Meeting at Quakertown, NJ, from 1729 to 1976." I have no idea how to get a copy. Ed's family was a long-time member of QMM. Quakertown MM gave many of their records to the Hunterdon County Historical Society. http://hunterdonhistory.org/
Re: WEBSTER
"The Friends finally decided in 1764 to have the "spring lot" conveyed to them from Daniel Doughty who conveyed it to James Willson, Robert Large, Harmen Kester, Samuel Kester, and Samuel Webster." There is a graveyard called the Nixon cemetery where non-Quakers were buried. QMM still holds the deed to that graveyard. "In 1807 a common Board of Trustees was appointed for all the property. Their names were Robert Emley, Thomas Twining, Samuel Webster, John Allen and Henry Cliffton. The last named was the survivor and he conveyed the trust to William Webster" and others. It mentions Joseph Webster of QMM in 1749 helping Hardwick to start a meeting. In 1774 Joseph Webster was fined 1 cow and two cattle worth 11 pounds 10 for refusing to take the Test of Allegiance to the State of New Jersey. Quakers only pledge allegiance to God. That is all the book has about Webster’s, but I would think Samuel or Joseph might be Phoebe's father.
This comes from the New Jersey Searchable Databases: Webster, Joseph (Grantee)

Also, Quakertown Monthly Meeting was first called Kingwood Monthly Meeting and Mahlon is mentioned. If you look for the marriage of Saml. Willson Jr. and Deborah Collins, you will find a list of people who signed their marriage "certificate". Both Mahlon and Pheobe Collins signed it. https://archive.org/.../recordsofkingwoo00frien_djvu.txt

Before there was a New Jersey there was a West Jersey and an East Jersey. You are concerned with West Jersey. Today Quakertown is part of Franklin Township but it used to be called Kingwood MM for some reason. Also, way back when it was part of Amwell Township. And Bucks is only about ten miles away as the crow flies just over the Delaware River.
Kingswood Monthly Meeting of Friends was there. If you research on Ancestry (which is free at most libraries), enter "Quaker records" in the "keyword" line. The old records take patience to read, but are full of detail Modified 4 November 2017 by Joachim Hawn

ABOUT CORRECT IDENTIFICATION:
Take but a moment to canvas a sampling of Family Tree and Genealogy sites - undoubtedly identifying the same man as is profiled here, and it becomes very apparent that there is no shortage of variance among Family Researchers concerning the Parentage and Ancestry; as well as accurate identification for 'who' his spouse had been.
Not in anyone's favor are two features that seems to most frequently produce problems......
ANN SMITH. It would be incredibly easy to mistake either or both for someone else.
Public Family Trees that are largely maintained by Descendant Family Researchers - where it is common to have untold numbers of active contributors....the potential for seriously counterproductive results
Most (the vast majority cited his death as: 1780...I have revised that dating here to: 1778 My rationale stems from closer view of the document shows how 1780 mistakenly became the cited date of death....it does appear upon Jonathan's Will, however it notes the date upon which his Will passed from Probate to Proven The earlier dating was the year he died: 1778.
But this alone does not provide instance for the only error regarding a marker-event in Jonathan's life. In fact there are several wrongly dated events that need to be at least spoken about.
He is also shown to have deceased, 1730 and 1745. He seems correctly associated with Sussex County, N.J. as the location of death, and place of burial. But an obvious thread of complication runs the length and depth of his life's timeline. Why is this? Are we even seeing the same individual? One perhaps who has inherited parts of our Jonathan Collins vital stats, and he as well, theirs? The answer is: No we'er not, and Yes he has.
To the best I can determine, here represent the most common points of duplicity but wrongly associated as to person, dates that actually belong to that other Jonathan Collins, and place/locations there is no evidence our Jonathan had ties to, yet now appears to. It's a quite common and easily executed error frequently encountered in genealogical efforts and represents for the most part an error of unintended mistake not mischief. Without malice is not without consequence however. Because there were several men bearing the same name, contextually close enough in other regards as well, that I doubt it to warrant optimism for a satisfying outcome that would see all put right. But we can at least acknowledge some of the more easily identified mistake possessing the best chance for restoration.
First: where was Jonathan born? Was it Pennsylvania, or Connecticut, or Great Britain...or even North Carolina?

Abstract clearly identifies this Jonathan Collins - and further names each And in Jonathan Collins particular case this could make all the difference....because it is with his story that confidence of research becomes much more tenuous and far less reliable. Mahlon Thomas Collins - a son of Jonathan and Ann Collins at: Mahlon Thomas Collins Ann Collins (Smith) wife of Jonathan Collins at Ann Collins (Smith) Jonathan was the first known Collins ancestor, and therefore assumed to be the first Collins born in British North America [as would be proper given his birth preceded our American Declaration Of Independence]. As such and until such time we have reliable, confirmed, source record verification identifying his parents and their places and dates of birth, for now and if only in name, Jonathan Collins Sr. appropriately is entitled as: Family Line Progenitor.
He appears to have entered the historical record about 1738 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania Where with Moses Collins and Joseph Collins (the precise nature of their relationship is thus far unknown by me. He applied for the Organization of a new township to be known as: "Tennicunk" [For context and historical verification, please see following source materials:]

I will venture to state what I believe obvious ... until or unless evidence to the contrary discredits my theory.
Though made more difficult by an absence of known Source Records, Historical Reference Materials or Family Traditions identifying with a degree of certainty Moses Collins and Joseph Collins in Familial context to Jonathan Collins Sr., the intrigue and possibility of discovery invite inquiry. My rationale is pretty basic. What the men share in common make worthy their inclusion in the process. Some of the most valuable information during research comes not directly but by way of information for other family members. With that in mind I used as my justification what most supports a hypothetical connection....
Common Surname Common Geography - at least initially. Proximate in age similarity (see vitals provided in following segment) The possibility of discovery prompted me to spend some time looking for anything on Jonathan by first investing Moses and Joseph for evidence of a familial context with Jonathan, and perhaps if fortunate, some detail as to how that context was in relational terms.
In pursuing historicity and context, first for Moses I first attempted by FamilySearch platform which yielded the following citation as best match candidate. The lack of vital detail however is problematic for any use beyond historical record and context of location

This is important in terms of correct and accurate identification, but also as acknowledgment that a transition in expectation has occurred as result of waning confidence between what is factual and what is not. Where there is a trade-off between demonstrable historicity (of record) and a claim as historical without benefit of evidence, there will be competing claims, conflicted details, variations and variety without the means necessary to discern between them. Example:
AT LEAST ONE MATCHING TREE PROFILE HOSTED BY FMAILYSEARCH ( See Geni / FamilySearch suggested above in Vitals Section) CLAIMS THE BIOLOGICAL PARENTAGE OF JONATHAN COLLINS, SR WAS: SAMUEL COLLINS and MARY COLLINS (MEACHAM) What accentuates my anxiety associated with competing claims which appear conflicted beyond optimism for resolution is: precisely because there are so few relevant examples of source records against which to counter a challenge to otherwise accepted detail.

Hello,
I am a descendant of Jonathan Collins through his son Mahlon Collins and his wife: Phoebe Collins (MNU). Feb 29 Reply to me Hi -
Several years ago I was contacted by a reader who pointed out that Jonathan's parents were not John & Mary Meachum, at least the fact that there was no evidence other than family trees on the internet. If you've found something, I'd be interested in knowing for sure that they were his parents.
Since I didn't have any evidence, I pulled them from my database as Jonathan's parents. John Collins and Mary Meachum were from Connecticut

Mar 3 Reply to Travis Travis,
First of all, thank you for responding.
Unfortunately, I have nothing new or compelling to add to the family narrative that I consider substantial. In fact, my query to you was in hope you'd discovered something I had not. In my Geni.com family tree, I had allowed for the names of John and Mary, based solely upon the persistence of other researcher assertions, although they as of yet, have provided no substantiating source, nor reliable historical reference. For the time being, I will leave them in place, purely because it will be easier to merge and overwrite incorrect data in the Geni scheme than to disconnect them. Please feel free to view, comment upon, and/or edit what I current display, at: Jonathan Collins, Sr. for Jonathan Sr. What I will do, is place a comment in the Overview sections for Jonathan, John and Mary regarding your conclusions, and equally, my suspicion of the cart before the horse. I also find it curious at least, that the latter Collins are connected to Connecticut and the only, all, narratives of Jonathan's origins point to Pennsylvania.
Always good to greet a relative!
And again, thanks for responding.

Update to above entry:
The response I received makes compelling the point that while there are several claims that John Collins and Mary Meacham are the parents of Jonathan Collins, [because] there is no empirical evidence nor compelling historical reference to support this assertion or sustain renewed efforts to that end. For me, the issue of CONNETICUT however as a decisive basis for "Rule Out" of parentage is far less compelling and even gains credibility once one looks at other Collins family member connections to the state. And that in and of itself is problematic for a sustained refutation of parentage [if] as part of the logic included is reference to Conneticut. The strength against parentage rests upon validity of the first argument:
However, I am not prepared at this point to contest the claim without some form of data to substantiate such a move. However, until discovery of compelling merit provides us stronger candidates (both paternal and maternal!) I intend to preface very carefully any reference to parentage
I encourage any Collins or Affiliated Families Researchers to share whatever information...for or against the parentage to please contact profile(s)manager(s) of this and other Collin's Family members profile. Jlphawn 3/3/2016

The ancestry of Jonathan Collins as viewed through different lineage of decent: The COLLINS line for my children ends with one of my ex-husband's great-great-grandmothers, Senna "Senie" COLLINS TOLLIVER who died in Los Angeles in 1950. The line's beginnings, as we know it, start with Jonathan COLLINS, Sr. in Pennsylvania in 1706. I strongly suspect that this line has Melungeon heritage due to the facts that COLLINS is a common name among that ethnicity, as well as the family is known to have lived in areas of North Carolina where Melungeon ancestry is common. Furthermore, a close biological relative of my children tested positive for sub-Saharan African ancestry in an autosomnal DNA test.
Ahnentafel #608 - Jonathan COLLINS, Sr. (1706 - 1779) born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He married Ann SMITH (b. 1719) on 2 Jul 1731 in Hardwich, Sussex Co., New Jersey where later Jonathan died. They had eight children.
Ahnentafel #304 - Mahlon COLLINS (1756 - 1834) born in Sussex County, New Jersey He married Phoebe WEBSTER (1756 - 1841) on 10 Oct 1776 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. They also had eight children. Mahlon would have been the right age to have served in the American Revolution, but so far, I have neither found, nor honestly looked, for information to support this. This couple likely followed their adult children to Grayson County, Virginia and eventually to Lawrence County, Indiana where Mahlon died.
PROFILE MANAGERS NOTE PERTAINING TO: Ahnentafel #304 - Mahlon COLLINS (1756 - 1834)
Regarding above reference to honored Service in the Revolutionary War... This is a hypothesis I have read elsewhere also by authors drawing upon much the same circumstantial criteria as merit for proposal of hypothetical military service. Please See: Geni Profile Mahlon Thomas Collins
YES. Mahlon was indeed at the right age and in the right place. This however on its own is entirely too weak to support any contention for a hypothetical link between the man and the proposed action. However, there are indeed much more compelling reasons for furthering the line of debate - but it does not rest upon Mahlon himself. We need to turn to other Collins men, contemporaries of Mahlon himself, and the descendants of his known brothers if we are to arrive at a reasonably informed opinion.
In Mahlon's Profile Overview Section I included another Researcher's findings regarding Collins Family Genealogical and Theological information. There is ample historically verified mentions of Collins men - both in direct family relationship to Mahlon, as well as evidence many Collins men of the following generation also had military ties and service. These would seem to suggest support for an argument (for) service even though Mahlon himself is never referenced in connection to military service in any capacity, nor is such indicated by honorific acknowledgment in his death and burial information.
Circumstantially...he was of the right age...however...as exampled by numerous examples unrelated to this case...being a male favorable in age for Service absolutely did not mean everyone of favorable circumstance found themselves so inclined! Furthermore let's not forego acknowledgment of what perhaps merits the most compelling evidence (factual not circumstantial) against enlistment ... our Mahlon was Quaker and to every indication was a conscientious, faithful, and obedient observer of his Faith Tradition. A religious tradition frequently defined Theologically as being Pacifist We know Mahlon was an observant Quaker as is evidenced by record of his CERTIFICATE OF REMOVAL (See: Mahlon Thomas Collins) Profile Overview and Sources Section for specifics. Of crucial importance is not the content details, but of exceeding value is the fact he was acting as a Quaker observing community custom. This theme repeats with record of his marriage, mentions of him, Phoebe and several of their children (variously) and record for at least two of his daughters marriages [within] the Quaker faith and Community. The take-away being we must factor-in and allow for the influence of Quaker teaching - not just for Mahlon, not merely on the subject of Military Service, but most pertinent of all is also by extension we must use the same lens when searching for his father:

Ahnentafel #152 - John COLLINS, Sr. (1777 - 1850) - born in Sussex County, New Jersey, he married Effie CONLEY (1775 - bef 1830); no marriage details found so far. They had seven children. This couple migrated with John's siblings and probably his parents to Grayson County, Virginia, where John died.
Ahnentafel #76 - Elijah COLLINS (1802 - 1896) - born, married, and died in Baywood, Grayson Co., Virginia, he married Margy COX (1817 - 1904) on 9 Jun 1832. They had 14 children, many of whom moved west to Nebraska and Colorado.
Ahnentafel #38 - Mahlon F. COLLINS (1846 - 1887) - born in Grayson County, Virginia, he married twice. His first wife was Mary A. "Polly" HACKLER (1848 - 1878), to whom he married on 18 Feb 1869 in Grayson County. They had five children, the eldest being my children's ancestor (see below). After Polly's death, Mahlon married Nancy WARD (1843 - 1920) by 1882. They had two children. With his second wife and children, Mahlon migrated west to Nebraska, where he died at age 41, probably in Battle Creek, Madison County.
Ahnentafel #19 - Senna "Senie" COLLINS (1870 - 1950) - born in Grayson County, Virginia, Senie moved west with her father, step-mother, and siblings to Battle Creek, Madison Co., Nebraska, where she met and married Clark Pleasant R. TOLLIVER (1861 - 1918) from North Carolina. They were married on 3 Jul 1886 and had nine children. The family migrated to Hotchkiss Twp., Delta Co., Colorado, where they met the MIDKIFF family. Two of their children married MIDKIFFs, and both families migrated further west into California in the 1910s. Clark died in 1918, and Senie remained unmarried for the rest of her life, another 32 years, living mainly with her children in the Los Angeles area. She died in Los Angeles, and was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, in Glendale. I was able to visit her grave in 2010 while attending Jamboree.
