John Collins, was superintendent of schools in Mass. and N.Y. John J. Collins, a former state education official and superintendent of several school districts, died yesterday of cancer in Grosvenor Park Nursing Home in Salem. He was 83.

Mr. Collins was born in Somerville, where he attended St. Anne's School. He graduated from Boston College High School in 1928 and from Boston College in 1932. He earned his master's degree in Latin from BC in 1934.

Mr. Collins was attending the Harvard School of Education when he left to serve in the Navy during World War II. As a lieutenant commander he was second in command of the USS McLeanahan, a destroyer based in the Atlantic.

He stayed in the Naval Reserve when the war ended and retired in 1972 with the rank of captain.

After the war he returned to his studies at Harvard while serving as principal of the Somerville Night School. He graduated from Harvard with a degree in education in 1947.

He was the former superintendent of schools of Wilmington and Goshen, N.Y., and the North Middlesex Regional School District

In 1966 he was appointed to the state Department of Education as the first regional coordinator of school systems. He retired in 1976.

Mr. Collins was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea parish in Marblehead. He was an avid baseball fan.

He leaves his wife, Regina (Manion) Collins of Marblehead; five sons, John J. Jr. of Manchester, Peter of Stockton, Calif, James of Shrewsbury, Daniel of Worcester and Patrick of Salem; two daughters, Ann Regina Collins of Darien, Conn., and Mary Kate Maghan of Stockton, Calif.; two sisters, Ellen Collins of Wilmington and Sister M. Jerome of Watertown; and 11 grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be said on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady Star of the Sea in Marblehead. Burial will be in Star of the Sea Cemetery, Marblehead. Boston Globe
