William Henry Collins was the son of Edward Collins and Effie Ward Collins. He was the paternal grandson of Peter Collins and Elizabeth Hall Collins and the maternal grandson of Solomon Truman Ward and Matilda Crum.

He was likely named after his maternal great-grandfather Reverend William Crum.
