Biography
Doctor Charles Howell Collins was born on 28th December 1822 at Devizes, Wiltshire, England.
Charles was a surgeon, having qualified LRCP and MRCS.
He married Henrietta Jane Heaven née Grosett on 6th July 1850 in St Andrew's Church, Cleveden, Somerset. [1] The couple made their home at The Beeches, Chew Magna, a village in the Chew Valley in north east Somerset. Sadly, Henrietta died at 44 years of age in 1869; having given birth to nine children, only four of whom survived infancy or early childhood:

- Captain Sir Robert Henry Muirhead Collins KCMG (1852-1927)
- William Norton Collins (1854-54)
- Charles Lewis Collins (1857-66)
- Frances Cecilia Grosett Collins (1858-1943)
- Mary Grosett Collins (1861-1904), married surname Gilmour
- William Howell Grosett Collins (1862-63)
- William Howell Grosett Collins (1865-68)
- Margaret Jane Grosett Collins (1867-67)
Following Henrietta's death, Charles married again, to Martha Devenish, in 1877 at Bath, Somerset. [2] They had one further daughter:
- Dorothy Howell Collins (1880-)
Charles passed away, six days before the 87th anniversary of his birth, on 22nd December 1909 at Chew Magna [3] and is buried in St Andrew's churchyard, Chew Magna. [4] He was survived by his three children, two living nearby in Somerset and one at London.
