Biography

John Collins, son of Benjamin Collins and Martha (Eaton) Collins, was born in Salisbury, Massachusetts in 1673.[1][2]

John Collins married a woman named Elizabeth. No marriage record has been found, but his wife's first name is well established from being mentioned in his children's birth records and will. According to Torrey's "New England Marriages Prior to 1700," her last name was Barnard and they were married in Amesbury, Massachusetts before 1695.[3][4] As discussed in the profile for Elizabeth, however, Torrey's is only as reliable as the sources he relied upon and no reliable evidence has been found that confirms Elizabeth's last name. Based on the date of birth of their first child in September or October 1695, John and Elizabeth were probably married about 1694.

John and Elizabeth had the following children, all of whose births were recorded in Salisbury and/or Amesbury, except for Samuel's which was recorded in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire:

  1. Jonathan, b. September or October 11, 1695[5][6]
  2. daughter (name not recorded), November 8, 1697[7]
  3. Robert, b. August 24, 1698[8]
  4. Elizabeth, b. November 21, 1700[9]
  5. Matthew, b. August 21, 1702[10]
  6. Martha, b. probably sometime in 1703-9.[11]
  7. Ebineazer, b. January 21, 1704[12]
  8. Tristram, b. probably sometime in 1706-9[13]
  9. Mary, b. probably sometime in 1706-12[14]
  10. Benjamin, b. probably sometime in 1706-11[15]
  11. Samuel, b. December 2, 1712[16]
  12. Hannah, b. May 1, 1718[17]

Sometime in the early 1700s, John moved north of the border to Hampton Falls, New Hampshire. In John Collin's will dated July 4, 1751,[18] he calls himself a resident of that town.

John's will also confirms his and Elizabeth's parentage of a number of his children for whom birth records cannot be found. In his will, he makes provision for his sons Tristam, Ebeneazer, Benjamin and Samuel, as well as his daughters Elizabeth, Martha and Hannah. Jonathan and Robert are understandably not mentioned since they predeceased their father. Mary is not referenced by name, but the will does provide for all household goods, after the death of his wife, to be divided among his four daughters. There is no mention of the Matthew, which could either mean that he predeceased his father or that he never existed and, in fact, the birth record for him does belong to Martha.[18]

John's will was probated in November 1758.[18].
