Biography

Birth: 1750 York County, Pennsylvania, USA. [1] Elizabeth was the daughter of William Samuel Collins (1718-1795) and Grace Hamilton (1723-1813). [2] [1]

Marriage: Pvt. John Gemmil/Gemmill (1745 - 1798), 1787 York County, PA [2nd wife].[1][2]

Death: 1824 York County, Pennsylvania, USA.[1]

Buried: There are two Find a Grave pages for his wife Elizabeth:

  1. Find A Grave: Memorial #130664466 for Elizabeth (Collins) Gemmill has information on the page for her parents, husband, siblings, and children by Elizabeth with no gravestone at 'Old Guinston Presbyterian Church Cemetery', Airville, York County, PA [1]
  2. Find A Grave: Memorial #191575754 for Elizabeth has the gravestone with John and his 1st wife Agnes at 'Round Hill Cemetery' [3]
  • Ted L. Gemmill states Elizabeth was buried, along with her husband and his first wife, at Downies Graveyard (Cemetery), Chanceford Twp., York County, PA. "Downies Graveyard was the burial ground used by the early generations of Gemmills and should not be confused with 'Old Guinston Cemetery' which is located at Guinston Chruch (founded in 1733). Due to poor care, and the encroachment of near-by farmers, the markers and headstones were removed from Downies Graveyard to the cemetery at Round Hill Presbyterian Church, East Hopewell Township, York County by John McAlister Gemmill in 1915, 'with consent by the heirs and legal descendants of those Gemmills buried there'. Today, only Robert Gemmill and his wife Sarah along with their family are interred at Downies. A marker denoting the names of those removed was erected at the sight [sic]." [4][5]
  • Support for the accuracy of the report is provided by a memorial dated 1915 and listing: [3] [6]
"John Gemmill
1745―1798
First Consort
Agnes Wallace
Second Consort
Elizabeth"

Research Notes

There is some dispute as to the number of children of John and Elizabeth. William N. Gemmill states: "His second wife was Elizabeth, with whom he had four children. They were Mary, Jean, Robert and Sarah." [7]

Ted L. Gemmill indicates they had five children: [8][2] [1]

  1. Elizabeth Gemmill(1789–1848)
  2. Robert Gemmill (1791–1813)
  3. Jean Gemmill (1792/1793–1793)
  4. Mary Jean Gemmill (1794– )
  5. Sarah Gemmill (1795– ).

•Eizabeth Gemmill is named as the wife of John Gemmill in his Will of 1798 and was appointed as one of the Executors of his Estate.
