Differentiation: This is Not the same James Collins (son of Edward Collins and Jane Jones ) who married Nancy Herndon. Note these two lines of the Collins family were associated with one another and may have had some form of cousin relationship. Ann Collins, sister of the subject of this profile, was married to Edward Collins Jr, another son of Edward COLLINS and Jane Jones.

This is not the James Collins who married Sarah Harvie.

Abstract of the Sarah Harvie marriage record reads:

MARRIAGES OF ORANGE COUNTY, VIRGINIA - 1747-1810

January 1792. James COLLINS and Sarah Harvie, of age, dau. John Harvie, who consents. Sur. William Mitchell. Wit. William Harvie. George Collins, father of James, consents for him. p 29

(Removed James son of James as husband.)

Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
James Collins III was a Virginia colonist.

James Collins, was son of James Collins and Mary James Kirtley

James married Lucy Burton, daughter of May Burton Jr., and Sarah Head. They were married 26 Aug 1793. The family is recorded living in Madison County, Virginia in 1810. At the time their family consisted of James and his wife, three sons, four daughters, and 13 enslaved persons.

Much is learned about this family from the following document: HEAD; Descent of Henry Head (1695-1770) in America; Compiled by !DRESS HEAD ALVORD, 1948. [1]

For ease of cross referencing, the following directly quotes from that document. Original numbers assigned within that document, for Lucy and their children have been retained.

74. LUCY BURTON, b. April 28, 1778, in Virginia: d. November, 1837, in Glasgow, Missouri; dau. Sarah Head (22) and May Burton, Jr.; mar. August 26, 1793, James Collins: b. February 22, 1769, in Virginia; d. March, 1826, in Missouri; s. James Collins of Culpepper county, Virginia, and Mary.

181. James, Jr. b. Sept. 23, 1802 m Mildred Christie Johnson

182. May Burton b. 1804

183. Mary Frances b. June 22, 1806

184. Martha b. 1808

(end of quote from referenced document)

Note the above children, all born before 1810, correlates with the census data. The family was living in Madison County, Virginia in 1815 when their daughter Sarah Collins married her cousin James Head, son of John Head and Nancy Ann Sanford. To this couple, their first daughter Lucy Ann Head was born 27 Mar 1816. (It is likely she was named for each of her grandmothers.)

It is reported that James Collins and wife Lucy Burton and were recorded living in Madison county, Virginia, in 1816 (citation needed, inferred from marriage of daughter?). The families of James Collins (with wife Lucy Burton and children) and James Head (with wife Sarah Collins and daughter Lucy Ann) moved to Lexington Kentucky, then on to Chariton County, Missouri. We learn that the timing of this move was when young Lucy Ann Head was teething. Quoting from the above cited Head research document, in the section on James Head, "A letter written at Lexington, Kentucky, dated June 9, 1817, to Mrs. Ann Head, Burton's Ville, Orange county, Virginia, and signed Sarah Head, states that the family had arrived on the 2nd and in which she says Lucy Ann was cutting teeth, and May Burton had not been well on the trip out (presumably May Burton Collins)."

It is reported the family of James Burton was living in Lexington Kentucky, in 1818 (citation needed), and that they were in Chariton County, Missouri in 1819. According to the Head family document, "On February 20, 1819 an item recorded in an abstract of Military Bounty Lands in the state of Missouri, Chariton county, shows that Cook's 35 Infantry conveyed to James Collins, the S. W. 33-53-16, and on March 13, 1819, John Robertson-20th Infantry conveyed to him additional land." (link to cited records needed) See link to BLM GLO records for James Collins in sources below. Though the record just mentioned is not within this set, we see others issued to James Collins located to the south of Salisbury, Missouri. (See image attached to this profile.)

According to the Head family document, James Collins' will was dated February 5, 1826, and proved in the March term, 1826, Huntsville, Missouri. (link to probate information needed.) At the time of his death they were living south of Salisbury, Missouri, and owned some 400 acres of land.

In the settlement of his estate, at the death of his wife Lucy, this land was included in a transfer of 400 acres to May B. Collins on December 26, 1837-consideration $1,000.00.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
