Probably born in Lynn, Massachusetts Colony. Moved to Westerly, Rhode Island Colony sometime before his daughters birth there in 1714, where he was a Friends preacher.

John Collins was one of six persons to purchase 3,000 acres of land on May 22, 1710 in what is now the northeastern part of the town of Hopkinton, Rhode Island. He was a Quaker.
