On 11 Oct, 1779, Simeon Perkins received news of Joseph Collins' death in New York of smallpox[4][8]. The exact date of his death is not known.

This diary makes hundreds of references to Joseph Collins, and other members of his family. Notably, page 257 of Volume 2, on October 11, 1779 states Capt. Kinney says that Capt. Horton told him Mr. Joseph Collins was Dead of the Small Pox; and on page 438 of Volume 3 the diary refers to the needy families in December 1796, including Mrs. Desire Collins (Desire Parker), and again on page 2 of Volume 4, in January 1797, she is administering the estate of her son David, who died on His Majesty's ship Africa
