  • Collins was a very common name in Virginia from early times, and certainly there were more than one Collins family present in many areas of the Virginia colony. Unfortunately many early Virginia records were destroyed during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars so it is difficult to locate birth, marriage and death records. As a result, no one can state with certainty who the ancestors were of John Collins II of Maidstone were. That said, one is left to rely on wills, books, manuscripts, family histories and publications which there are many --- each with conflicting information. The following geneology.com forum discusses some of the conflicting information on the Collins descendants and provides some rationale on what may or may not be accurate: https://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/collins/1489/

No original source records have been located to confirm birth or marriage records. It appears that some erroneous information may have been published, and perhaps republished/reported, making the “actual facts” obscure. There is a great deal of conflicting information surrounding the Collins Family of Essex – Many Source-to-Source discrepancies; co-mingling, Lack of records; conflicting family stories; number of Collin’s with the same names, etc.

  • An Effort has been made to update/split individual information from the Contemporary Profiles frequently containing co-mingled data on the various "Joseph's, Richards, Williams etc., (see individual profiles for more detailed information). See Also Collins Family Research Notes

Biography

William Collins, born about 1615 was 20 years old when he set sail aboard the ship "Plain Joan", Richard Backum, Master, from England to Virginia. There was also another William Collins aboard, age 34. This would make one of them born about 1601 and the other in about 1615. In total there were 84 men, 80 of which were all between 14 and 36. This suggests that these younger men with no wives or children with them were coming to Virginia to work. [1] [2]

When William was 55 he married 25 year old Ann King Wilds, a widow in 1675, the year her deceased husband, Thomas Wilds died. This is based on the following: Thomas Wilds had died intestate in June 1675. The administration of his estate was requested by William Collins, Ann's current current husband. [3]

Twelve years later, William Collins, aged 72 died intestate on 10 October 1687 in Isle of Wight, Virginia. Ann soon remarried to Slexander Murre. Appraisal of her husbands estate was presented by Nicholas Smith, Robert King, William Smith and John Weston October 21, 1687 [4] Administration of his estate was requested October 21, 1687 by Alexander Murre, who married Anne, relict of the said Collins. [5]

Ann King Wilds Collins Murray died in February of 1701 at the age of 49. Ann's estate was appraised 08 Jun 1701 and her will was proven on 10 Feb 1701 by Frances Parker and Robert King in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. In her will she names as Legatees: son, JOHN COLLINS; daughter, ANN COLLINS; daughter MARTHA MURRAY; daughter MARY MURRAY; last two daughters to live with their uncle, ROBERT KING. [6]

Hemay have been renting in Southold or shelter Island where ships went to Virginia regularly. I’ve seen his name somewhere else in these records but he’s not in the index.

Confusing minor issues

King and Queen Co VA wasn't formed until 16 Apr 1691 from New Kent Co so it would make sense since if he died in Isle of Wright and the children were all born in Isle of Wright. Does anything show he was in Caroline Co VA? Paragraph above children shows son John b around 1642 Isle of Wright Co VA and in the list of children born King and Queen Co. Although I have these same 5 Collins children. her estate lists only son John Collins and her youngest two Murray daughters. Could be all got their share prior so will leave them.

we may have it all wrong and Anne King Wildes may have been 49 at death

Thomas Wilde dying intestate, Administration requested by William Collins who married Ann his relict Apr 3, 1673 Recorded Apr 9 1673

Collins-2787 and Collins-853 do not represent the same person because: More accurate merge would be between Collins 2787 and Collins 4348. Collins 853 seems to have a sibling also named William. My Collins 2787 death year is 1687, not 1705. Maiden name of spouse does not match. Other mismatches, as well. Cheers.
