The following biographical information is taken from the 1881 History of Marlborough, New Hampshire:
Lieut. Joseph Collins came to Marlborough, New Hampshire in 1767. He is supposed to be a descendant of Henry Collins, who was born in England in the year 1606. Joseph born in Southborough, Mass, June 9, 1726, married on May 29, 1749 Eunice Matthews, born October 10, 1730.
Joseph came from Southborough to Marlborough on foot, taking with him three sons, and provisions for a limited time. Tradition says that each brought a pack on his back of as many pounds weight as he was years old.
He settled first on the old Simeon Whitcomb place, near the pine woods, on the old road leading past the lower mill of the Marlborough Manufacturing Company. He was an enterprising man, and probably did more towards bringing forward the settlement of the township than any other proprietor. He was appointed the first Justice of the Peace in town, and held various town office.
He died July 15, 1798 and his widow married Theophilus Howard, and died March 23, 1809. Twelve children are listed. [1]
