Archer was born on 16th January 1888. He passed away in December 1953. He lived in Tamerton Foliot until his mother died in 1901. He moved to Liverpool with his father but did not get on with his new step mother and left home to join the merchant navy as a cabin boy. When he was about 14 years old he put his age on by several years and joined the Royal Navy. He served in the Royal Navy until retiring. He and his wife Emily took an ale house (Frederick Inn) in Frederick Street, Plymouth (Stonehouse) until they went bankrupt. Archer then found work in Devonport Dockyard until called up for service in WW2 in the Royal Naval Reserve. He served through both WW1 and WW2. His rank was Leading Stoker. During his time in the Royal Navy he returned to Plymouth and is recorded in the 1911 census lodging with an aunt in St Budeaux. He met Emily sometime around then when she was working as a barmaid at The Trelawney Inn in St Budeaux and they married in the parish church in St Budeaux on December 11th 1915. [1]
