Thomas Colton lived at the family home in South Scarle Hall, Nottinghamshire, at the time of his death and for a number of years prior to this (based on census records). His profession on the census records was quoted as "farmer"[1]. According to the probate records, he was a "gentleman" and left effects of £5,629. Probate was granted to his solicitor, Arthur James Franks[2].
In 1881 Thomas was living at Wauldby Hall, in Yorkshire, with Richard Botterill - the census return stated that Thomas was a "farm pupil" [3].
The 1911 England Census return confirms that Thomas likely never married[4]
