Biography
Walter was born in 1837. He was the son of George Colton and Catherine Vincent, a harness maker by trade, like his father.
He married Clarissa Prichard in 1861.[1] Since he is listed as 25 years old on the Union roster, he must have enlisted shortly after his marriage. He mustered in at Detroit, Michigan August 30, 1862. His pension records show he served with Co. A 1st Michigan Cavalry as well as Co. F in the 5th. He served as a saddler.[2] He was killed by Indians near Willow Springs, Big Laramie, Dakota Territory, while serving with the 1st Michigan Calvary, Company A in 1865.

His widow began receiving a pension in 1865.[3][4][5] Clarissa remarried to Joel Rugg and George Hoyland. She passed away in 1913.
