Obituary

The following obituary was published in the Worcestershire Chronicle.

DEATH OF GENERAL COLVILE. - We regret to record the death, on Monday last, of General Colvile, of Kempsey House, near this city, which took place suddenly in London, on the above date, as the gallant officer was on his way to visit a niece at Brighton. Henry Robert Colvile was the youngest son of the late Sir Charles Henry Colvile, of Duffield Hall and Lullingston, county Derby, by his wife Amelia, eldest daughter of Sir Charles Asgill, Bart., and was descended from a family coeval with the Norman conquest, originally seated in Cambridgeshire. His nephew, Mr. Chas. Robert Colvile, the present head of the family, represented South Derbyshire in several parliaments. The late General Colvile entered the army as ensign and lieutenant in the Scots Fusileer Guards, Dec. 29th, 1813; became lieutenant and captain, Nov. 6, 1817; captain and lieutenant-colonel, July 6th, 1830; major and colonel, Dec. 31st, 1844; lieutenant-colonel (commanding), March 25th, 1853; major-general, June 20th, 1854; lieut.-general, July 20th, 1860; and general, March 27th, 1868. In Oct., 1864, he was promoted to the Colonelcy of the 12th Foot (East Suffolk). The deceased officer, who was in his 81st year, married, in 1836, Julia, the eldest sister of the first Baron Leigh, and aunt to the present peer. Without verging upon extravagant eulogy, he may be described as one of the most amiable, benevolent, and truly charitable of men, one with whom to behold distress was to relieve it, and esteemed and beloved by all within the sphere of his knowledge or acquaintance. At Kempsey, where he resided, and where his beneficence and kindly nature have been so widely diffused, an universal gloom is felt at losing him. The deprivation is felt as gravely and as mournfully as that of a dear friend or near relative. Indeed, General Colvile was the friend and counsellor and aider of every one in trouble or affliction. He looked upon all the poor as his relatives on the side of humanity, and always so treated them. His good actions, like those of just men - and just he emphatically was - will long "smell sweet and blossom in the silent dust." - Published in the Worcestershire Chronicle, Saturday, November 6, 1875.
