John was born in 1690. He was the son of Alexander Colville and Mary Erskine. [1]
He married Elizabeth Johnson in Ireland in 1716.
He succeeded as the 6th Lord Colville of Culross on 27 May 1723, after his claim to the title was allowed.
He was an ensign in the 26th Cameronian Regiment. He fought at Malplaquet in 1709. In 1727 he fought at Gilbralter.
In 1739 he was promoted to rank of lieutenant-colonel, and given command of a battalion in Colonel Gooch’s American Regiment. In 1741 he was sent to Carthagena and fell ill on board ship and died.
