Charles Colville was the third son of John Colville, 8th Lord Colville of Culross and Amelia Webber. He was born August 7, 1770 in the peerage of Scotland.[1]

In 1818, Colville married Jane Mure and had three daughters and two sons. His first son, Charles, would become the 9th Lord of Colville of Culross upon the death of his uncle, Admiral John Colville.[1]

During the Napoleonic Wars, Colville had an excellent military service record and participated in many notorious conflicts such as: The West Indies (1791-1797), Irish Rebellion (1798), Egypt (1801), Martinique (1809), Peninsular War (1810-1814), Waterloo Campaign (1815), and Bombay (1819).[1]

Colville was the 3rd Governor of Mauritius when the population of 100,000 (two-thirds of which were in slavery), were in semi-revolt against the crown. In 1829, he described the slave mentality of the island's landowning inhabitants as extremely hostile to any reforms of slaves' working conditions.[1]

Colville was promoted to general on January 10, 1837, and passed away at Rosslyn House, Hampstead, London, England on March 27, 1843. There is a decorative bush, a member of the legume family which is called Colvillea racemosa in his honour. Also, in his novel Les Miserables, Victor Hugo credits Colville (or Maitland) with asking for the surrender of the Imperial Guard and receiving General Cambronne's reply of "Merde".[1]
