Biography

Daniel was born about 1737. He was the son of Mason Colvin and Levinia Tool. He passed away about 1806.

He and his eldest son Mason enlisted during the American Revolution from the County of Culpeper on 14th November 1779 in the Company of Capt. Benjamin Roberts as a part of Maj. George Slaughter's Battalion. This company was marched to the falls of the Ohio (now Louisville) in the Spring of 1780 and were there joined to Col. Joseph Crockett's Illinois Regiment. They were discharged in 1781.

In 1834, the heirs of Daniel Colvin, and of his son Mason Colvin, who had died without issue made application for Bounty Land for service of their deceased father and brother. Although Daniel and Mason had been discharged earlier than their three year commitment, having only served approximately 2 years, it was determined the heirs were "unquestionably entitled to all the benefits of an actual service of at least three years; they having been prevented from complying with their engagement, by the act of the State, who discharg’d them, perhaps, against their wishes."

During these proceedings it was divulged that Daniel's son Mason had been horrifically and permanently made an invalid on his way home by the fall of his horse. He was cared for by his father and had died a few years afterwards.

On 18 May 1835, the heirs of Daniel Colvin, and of his son Mason Colvin, had themselves certified in Culpeper Court, as the proper and only heirs of these men. The children of Daniel and heirs of Mason, were from these proceedings determined to be as follows:

Mason Colvin, eldest, died unmarried w/o issue
Elizabeth Colvin
James Colvin
Nelson Colvin
William Colvin
Mary Colvin, m. Daniel Smith
Gabriel Colvin, who was also dec'd, his widow, Mary (Roberts) & children
Fanny Colvin, m. Olley N. Rosser
