Grace Colway was born in March 1820 in Killeavy, County Armagh, Ireland (now Northern Ireland). She was the daughter of Matthew Colway, a joiner, and his wife Esther.[1][2]
Grace married James Wilson McClenaghan in Ireland before November 1840.[2]
James McClenaghan and his wife Grace travelled to Australia aboard the "Argyleshire" in 1840, arriving in Sydney, New South Wales on 12 November that year. They travelled with James' sister Martha and her husband James Mitchell and Martha and James Mitchell's infant son Joseph William Mitchell.[2][3]
As they travelled as assisted passengers, they had to meet certain requirements to enter Australia. Grace presented documents to prove that her baptism was certified by Alex Henry, a Presbyterian Minister. Andrew Cleland, Presbyterian Minister of Ballintemple-Glebe near Newry, also certified that this baptism was correct and that Grace was of good character.[2]
Grace was able to read and write, her religion was Protestant, her health, strength and "probable usefulness" were very good and no complaints were listed.[2]
James and Grace had three sons and three daughters:
Grace McClenaghan died in Paddington, Sydney, New South Wales in 1859.[1]
Not sure that her surname is correct. On some records she is recorded as Colwell, Cauldwell, Caldwin.
