John was born in 1732[1]. He was the son of Thomas Combs and Mary Shippey Shippey. He married Rebecca Fitz Randolph in 1753[1] and they resided in Upper Freehold Township in Monmouth County, New Jersey. He passed away in 1803 (one source is the will abstract below -- the exact date needs confirmation by other sources).
John Combs Sr. of Upper Freehold, Monmouth County wrote a will June 3, 1798. He updated it May 16, 1803 and it was proved June 17, 1803. The abstract includes the following[2]:
The original will mentions his wife Rebecca and an allotment for son Ezekiel to care for her while she remains unmarried. He bequeaths money to sons Thomas, Isaac, John, Stephen, and Benjamin and to sons-in-law Isaac Ely and George Ely. He mentions only one daughter by name, Mary Clevenger. Executors are Thomas and Ezekiel Combs.
The update in 1803 concerns the children of Isaac Ely and George Ely by his daughters are to have no further claim on his estate.
