Biography

Thomas was born in 1695. His will was proved Dec. 22, 1757.

The Combs of Upper Freehold were Quakers who attended meeting a Chesterfield Monthly Meeting in Burlington Co. Freehold and Upper Freehold are at least a half-hours (present-day) drive apart.
A second Thomas COMBS d testate (will dated 1757), but was of Upper Freehold Twp. This 2nd Thomas COMBS is thought to have been the Quaker earlier in the Hopewell (then Middlesex Co) area, and believed to have m (1) 1723 Mary SHIPPEY by whom he had sons John, b 26 Nov 1732, d. about June 1803, m. Rebecca FITZRANDOLPH; and James, b about 1734, d 1813.; and (2) Keziah LEMMING (aka LIMING) by whom he had two daughters, Lydia, b unk, d. aft Sep 1819, m. Joshua NORTON; and Dinah, b unk, m 1771, Monmouth, Benjamin HUTCHISON.

The Two Thomas Combs

There is much confusion in the New Jersey Records because there were two Thomas Combs living in Monmouth County area. One was the son of Richard Combs. Thomas Combs son of Richard Combs made his will 12 Oct 1723 (Monmouth Co NJ, Recorded Copy: Vol A, p.298) Will of Thomas COMBS of Freehold. Richard and Thomas were members of the Old Tennet (Scots-Presbyterian) Church.

Family

Father is believed to be Francis Combs of Newtown, Long Island, who died in 1700, based on Stoney Brook connections. Documented proof or Y-DNA study needed.

Religion

He and his family lived first near Stoney Brook, in Windsor Township, old Middlesex Co., NJ, where they were connected to the local preparative Quaker meeting (subordinate to Chesterfield Monthly Meeting of Friends). They subsequently relocated to neighboring Upper Freehold Twp., Monmouth Co., and continued to be active in Chesterfield Monthly Meeting.

07 Jun 1757 Upper Freehold, Monmouth Co, NJ. Will of Thomas COMBS.

Know all men by these Presents that I Thomas COMBS of the township of Upper Freehold in the County of Monmouth and Province of New Yersey Yeoman [Farmer] Calling to Mind the Mortality of this Body and Knowing that all men must Dye Do make this my last will and Testament in the Manner following. I Recommend my Soul to God that Gave it and my Body to the Earth to be Buryed in a Decent Manner by my Executors hereafter Named.
First I Will Bequeath and Give to my Son John COMES and to his Heirs and Assignes forever all that Piece of Meadow within Ditch Lying north of my House and Adjoyning the Land I Gave my Son John a Deed for in full of his Portion.
Secondly I will Bequeath and Give to my Son James COMES and to his Heirs and Assignes Forever all the Plantation whereon I now live Excepting that part which I have by Deed and this will Given my Son John.
Thirdly I will and Give my Daughter Lydia Twenty Pounds for her Portion to be paid to her when She is Eighteen Years of Age.
Fourthly I Will and Give my Daughter Dinah Fifteen Pounds to be paid her when She is Eighteen years of Age for her Portion.
Fifthly I will and Give my Beloved Wife Kesiah all and Singular my Moveable Estate Whatsoever or Wheresoever Provided Always she Doth fully pay and discharge my Debts which I Justly Owe, and Legacys herein Given. To be in full of her Dower
And I Do hereby Nominate Constitute and Make my Beloved wife Kesiah COMES and my Son John COMES the Executors of this my last will and Testament.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto Sett my hand and Seall the Seventh Day of June in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Fifty Seven.

KB Notes: Thomas COMBS died between June and October of 1757 in Upper Freehold. His wife, Keziah, was Thomas COMBS' second marriage, he having (probably) married Mary SHIPPEY in 1723, and may have married Sarah TINDALE in 1747 as well. Kezia LIMING had m Thomas COMBS by (probably) 1748. She was the daughter of John LIMING and his wife Dinah. Keziah LIMING Combs and her daughter, Lydia COMBS, were named in John LIMING'S will of June 1757 [Dinah also named? Twp./County of John? Abstract still needed]. Keziah LIMING Combs married a second time to John LIMING on Oct 31, 1757 in Upper Freehold (See below). According to Combs Researcher Birdie McNutt, the original source for will of Thomas COMBS of Township of Upper Freehold, County of Monmouth, New Jersey, Yeomen, is Liber 9, Page 166, signed 7 June 1757, proved 22 December 1757.
