Biography

Victor Comeau is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, Plaque 2 Left. Listed with him is his wife Anne Michel and two sons Thomas and Jean.[1]

Victor and his wife came to Cap-François, Saint-Domingue (now Cap-Haïtien, Haiti) from Halifax, Nova Scotia, after the Acadian prisoners were released by the Treaty of Paris in 1763.[2] After his delayed release from imprisonment, Joseph Broussard, dit "Beausoleil" led two boatloads of refugees from Halifax to Saint-Domingue, then on to Louisiana. The Comeaus stayed long enough in Saint-Domingue for Jean Comeau to be born c.1764 before proceeding to Louisiana.

Jean was counted in the Attakapas, Louisiana census in 1766 at La Manque District, unnamed, but certainly one of the 2 boys in the household of Victor COUMAU.[citation needed] In 1769 he was counted with his brother and their widowed mother.[3]

By 1777 his mother had remarried and the blended family was living in Opelousas, Louisiana.[4] He was counted there again in 1785 and 1788.[citation needed]

Jean Comeau married Esther LeBlanc in St. Martinville, Louisiana in 1786.[5]

Known children of the marriage:
  1. Marie Comeaux (1786)[6]
  2. Marguerite Comeau (1790-1804)[7]
  3. Julien Comeaux (1793)[8]
  4. Celeste Comeau (c.1794)[9]

His wife appears to have died c.1822;[10] and he in 1828 in Lafayette, Louisiana.[11]

Note: This family tree doesn't list any sources. It should also be noted that it includes the wrong Marguerite Comeaux as a daughter. The daughter of this family named Marguerite Comeaux died in 1805, so could not have married John Abshire Jr.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jean by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA test-takers in his direct paternal line. Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line: It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jean:

Ok, I suggest you put your concerns about the Marguerite married to Abshire on her profile and not on this one. In that case, you would be showing that her parents aren't correct or the husband isn't correct and anything else. The death date is an estimate. In the alternative, you could edit Marguerite Comeaux-59 that currently has the correct birth date and parents, removing what doesn't belong. Did she not marry the Abshire--I don't see definitive source linking her birth and parents to her marriage? It's always a question as to how to resolve mixups like this one. I'd like to help but don't have enough information.

She belongs, her dob wasn't correct. I put it on her profile.

The Margaret Comeau that was connected to this profile was not their daughter, and has been disconnected. That leaves two known daughters that need profiles created. Added that category to this profile for future attention.

Comeau-442 and Comeaux-306 appear to represent the same person because: Initially unable to find Jean Comeau, I added the Comeaux-306. As I was attaching father/mother record, I realized he was already recorded as Comeau-442. My mistake.
