Biography

Rosalie Comeau was born about 1752, probably at Malpec on Prince Edward Island. She was the daughter of Jean Comeau and Marie Henry.[1] She was born in or after 1752 since she was not included in the 1752 census at Malpec with her parents.[2]

She married Paul Godin dit Bellefontaine on October 1, 1770 in Halifax.[1][3]

Marriage Document

They had at least 4 children. Their first child Andre was baptized at Halifax:

  1. Andre (1771-____)
  2. Esther (abt.1774-1832) m. Raphael Poirier
  3. Régis (abt.1780-1851) m. Scholastique Bourgeois
  4. Luc (abt.1783-1861) m. Marie Anne Petitpas

Rosalie's burial is not recorded. She may have died in Memramcook before 1806, when the surviving Memramcook parish records begin.

Research Notes

Her marriage record says that her parents are "Jean Coumaux and Marie Hebert", a couple that doesn't seem to exist. Most likely there was an error in the record and her mother's maiden name was actually Henri. Jean Baptiste Comeau and Marie Henri lived in Halifax ~1762 where their son Pierre Paul was born, and Rosalie married in 1770 in Halifax.

In the marriage record for Rosalie's grandson Pierre Bellefontaine and his wife Suzanne Vautour, they were granted a dispensation for 3 to 4 degrees of consanguinity.[4] In other words, they should be 2nd cousins once removed. This provides evidence that Rosalie Comeau is the daughter of Jean Comeau, since Pierre and his wife Suzanne appear to be second cousins once removed through Jean Comeau and Marie Henry.

Also, in the 1771 baptism of their son Andre, the godparents were Victor Theriau and Marie Robert. Robert was a dit name for the Henry family. The godmother Marie Robert was probably Rosalie's mother.
