Birth
Mary was born in February 1838 in Wisconsin Territory.
Name
The 1905 census gives her clan name as She-zha-win-kah, which is for Šižąwįga, from ši, "to order someone, to command someone, to tell someone to do something"; žą, "one"; -wį, a feminine gender suffix; and -ga, a definite article suffix used in personal names. The name means, "Commanding One," but it does not appear to be peculiar to some particular clan, so we cannot tell to what clan she belonged.
