OLDEST MAN IN COUNTY AND ONLY SURVIVING MEXICAN WAR VETERAN DIES
ELISHA COMPTON AND JOE SAWYER
COMPTON, AGED 98, DROVE THRU WITH PARTY FROM VIRGINIA 85 YRS AGO...
Elisha Compton, 98, the oldest man and probably the longest living resident of Coshocton county, died Wednesday night at his home in Jackson township where he had resided for 85 years. His death was the natural wearing out of his body and several weeks of illness where he suffered no pain but grew weaker day by day until the heartbeats, so faint for days they could scarcely be detected, ceased altogether Wednesday night at 6 o'clock. Mr. Compton was born in Culpepper county, Virginia Sept 9, 1816. He came to Ohio and settled in Jackson township in 1830, where he spent the remainder of his life. In 1841 he was married to Hulda Ann Hayes, who died in 1880. Eight children were born to this union. DROVE FROM VIRGINIA Mr. Compton was one of a party of twenty-five , consisting of two brothers and four sisters, with their families, together with neighbors, who drove across the country from their Virginia homes, to this county. They crossed the Ohio river at Wheeling and were nineteen days on the way. A rare man in many respects, Mr. Compton was one of the most influential citizens of the county. Coming when the country was all new he cleared his own land for farming and all during his long life, took great pride in the cultivation and appearance of his farm. though obliged to give up active farming years ago, he did not give up his interest in it and until a week before his death, insisted on doing what chores he could about the house and farm. RETAINS HIS FACILITIES Never robust, but on the other hand very delicate in appearance, he lived to his ripe old age with his facilities quite well preserved, contributing his longevity to his moderate and temperate way of living. Though his sight and hearing were somewhat impaired during late years, his mental facilities were perfect to the last, and his memory of people and events, both present and past, was remarkable. Always of an unselfish disposition, his greatest desire seemed to be to know that his friends were prosperous and happy. For a number of years his birthday anniversaries have been celebrated with family reunions, and the day was always remembered by his scores of friends. STAUNCH CHURCH MEMBER A lifelong member of the M.E. Church, Mr. Compton was one of the main supporters of the Roscoe Church. When the church burned down in 1872, it was largely through his efforts and generous donations that it was rebuilt and maintained. Six children; fourteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren, survive. The sons and daughters are, R.T. Compton, who for the last eight years has lived with and taken care of his father; J. A. and John M. Compton, both of Coshocton; H.W. Compton, a lawyer in Toledo; Mrs. Mary A Smith of Trinway; and Mrs. Millie McFarland of Coshocton. The funeral will be held Friday at the Roscoe M.E. Church.
