Biography

Barnabas Conant was born on 16 Mar 1761, in Beverly, Essex County, in the Province of Massachusetts Bay. He was the second son of Daniel Conant, Jr. and Elizabeth Dodge to carry the name of Barnabas,[1][2][3] his older brother having died as a child, in 1758.[4][5]

A Soldier of the Revolution

1776 Project
Sergeant Barnabas Conant served with Essex County, Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.

When he was only 14 years old, Barnabas enlisted on 7 Jul 1775, as a private in Captain Micah Hamblin's company. He served on the Massachusetts seacoast until he was discharged on 1 Nov 1775.[6] Two months later, he was listed as a corporal in Captain John Grannis's company, again assigned to the seacoast. He marched on 1 Feb 1776, serving four months, until 1 Jun 1776, with his name appearing on Rolls dated from Tarpaulin Cove.[7][8] When he enlisted again on 1 Jun 1776, he had received a promotion to sergeant, again in Captain Grannis's company, where he served until he was discharged on 21 Nov 1776 (two months and 21 days), under Lieutenant James Blossom while stationed at the Elizabeth Islands.[9][10]

On 11 Nov 1777, Barnabas enlisted again, this time as a private in Captain Miles Greenwood's company in Colonel Jacob Gerrish's Guard Regiment and served for four months and 23 days, until 3 Apr 1778, when his name appeared on Rolls dated from Camp on Winter Hill.[11][12][13]

Marriage and Family

In the years after the end of the war, Barnabas became a resident of Danvers, Essex County, Massachusetts, working as a ship's carpenter and cooper.[14] After entering their intention to marry in Beverly on 12 Aug 1786 and publishing it on 13 Aug,[15] Barnabas was married to Mary Batchelder of Beverly in Danvers on 8 Oct 1786, by Rev. Benjamin Wadsworth of Beverly.[16][17][18] There is a duplicate record of this marriage in the collected vital records of Beverly, but it states that the marriage took place in Danvers.[19]

Benjamin and Mary's first child was born in 1787, in Danvers. In 1790, after the first United States Census found them in Danvers,[20] Barnabas relocated his family to the town of Wendell in Cheshire County, New Hampshire, where his second child was born in February of 1791. In all, Barnabas and Mary had four children:

  1. Mary Conant (b. 1 Mar 1787, Danvers, Massachusetts).[21][22]
  2. Elizabeth Conant (b. 21 Feb 1791, Wendell, New Hampshire)[23]
  3. Josiah Conant (b. 13 Dec 1793, Wendell, New Hampshire)[24]
  4. William Conant (b. 19 Jul 1797, Wendell, New Hampshire)[25]

Barnabas was sufficiently prosperous after the move to New Hampshire that, on 9 Nov 1793, he could buy land in Wendell, New Hampshire, from John Wendell of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, for £60.[26]

Mary ("Molly") Batchelder Conant died on 10 Nov 1803, in Wendell, Cheshire County, New Hampshire.[27]

Barnabas remarried on 10 Aug 1806, in Wendell. His second wife was Nancy George.[28]

Barnabas died in New Hampshire, probably in Wendell (after 1750, Sunapee), Sullivan County (previously part of Cheshire County), on 27 Feb 1847,[29] and was buried at Eastman Cemetery, Sunapee, New Hampshire. His memorial has links to those of family members.[30]

Research Notes

Note on Place Names: In 1827, Sullivan County (including Wendell) was formed from part of Cheshire County. In 1850, the name of the town of Wendell was changed to Sunapee.
