Antipas was baptised 9 April 1783 in Poundstock, Cornwall.[1]
His 1st marriage was to Mary Ann Uglow on 16 August 1808 in Week St Mary and they both signed their names. The parish register states: "Antipas Congdon of the parish of Jacobstow married Mary Ann Uglow of this parish, by banns. Witnesses: William Charles; George Congdon."[2]
Research indicates that they did not have any children.
Antipas' 2nd marriage was to Betsy Grigg on 28 November 1816 in their "home parish" of Jacobstow and they had 10 children.[3]
He was buried 14 June 1851 in Jacobstow[4] and Betsy lived until 1878.
Mary Ann didn't die until 1865 so what happened??
Upon discovering a marriage for a Mary Ann Congdon to Richard Kittow on 12 April 1812 in Boyton, Cornwall and that one of their daughters was named Elizabeth Uglow Kittow, research began to find out what the connections might be since the name "Uglow" is not usually used unless there is a family connection.
Divorce or ???
Divorce was very very rare and almost unrecognised in the early 1800's, especially amongst country folk so the first marriage could only have been ended through his death.
Research has shown that Antipas and Mary Ann married other people while still married to each other -- she married in 1812 to Richard Kittow and he married in 1816 to Betsy Grigg.
