Undetermined Origins

Despite numerous online trees stating it as a fact, John Conklin was not the son of Ananias Conklin and Mary Launder who married in Nottinghamshire, England and emigrated to America in the late 1630s. Please see the discussion at Conklin Families of America for more details.

Biography

It is unlikely that he was born in England where Conklin was a very rare surname. More likely he came to America from continental Europe. He settled in New Amsterdam in the 1660s.

He was living in Flushing in 1665 when he bought land in Rye from John Budd. He lived in Rye until 1676 when he sold his land there to John and Joseph Horton and moved to Eastchester where he died before 1698. He and wife Helena had children:

  1. Nicholas mar. Sarah Hunt
  2. Deliverance mar. Engeltje Buckhout
  3. Cathleen mar. Gerret VanWert
  4. John mar. Mehitabel (Tippet) Hadley; mar. Lydia ______
  5. Samuel mar. Annatje VanWert
  6. Mary mar. Barent Dutcher
  7. Joseph mar. Rebecca Hyatt[1]

It seems this John Conklin Sr. Was John Conklin Jr. until his father died in 1684..

It appears he is being mixed up with Conklin-228 .

Southold town records, volume one, page 436 In Oct, 1655 John Conckelyne Jr. Aged 25 years mentioned “this deponent’s father John Conckelyne Senior”. So this deponent was born 1655 - 25 = 1630. And his birth place is on his gravestone in Southold.

The analysis below points out that John of Rye has no DNA connection to either John or Ananias. It appears he needs to be detached from any parents.

I am disconnecting the parents, consistent with the information on that page and in the G2G thread https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1041371/parentage-of-john-conklin-of-new-york

There seems to be no good evidence for the parents of this man, referred to in some of this material as John Conklin of Rye.

This John was not the son of John Conklin-705, baptised 1630 in Nuthall, Nottinghamshire. He appears to have a completely separate and documented future to this John.

On the other hand, there are no records to support him being the son of Ananias. The Nottinghamshire parish registers do not record any children being born to Ananias, and those of Old Swinford in Worcestershire show only his two sons Jeromy and Cornelius. It is possible that he is missing from the transcripts available online (as it would appear is his "sister" Mary). If anyone is conveniently close to the Worcester Archives it would be well worth consulting the originals.

There are two other possible John Conklins, both possibly nephews of Ananias and John.

John Concklyn s/o George was baptised at Old Swinford 23 Jun 1621

John Canklin s/o Jacob was baptised at Old Swinford 14 Apr 1636

In Nuthall, Nottingham England on 19 Sept. 1630 John Conclen was christened . Father was John Conclen. [1]. This connects with the grave details of John Conklin, jr. mentioned below.

Grave details here [1]. I believe his father, John Sr. , went to western Long Island. One of those towns has a death record for John Conklin. See Southold town records, volume 1, p. 372-3 where John conklin, sr. Is about to move away from Southold and gives all his property to his son John . Jr.

It would appear that linking John Conklin Sr. (Conklin-242) as son of Ananias Conklin (Conklin-72) is in conflict with Y-DNA findings documented in Honor Conklin's study of 2011. Work of G. MacKenzie cited is questionable if not debunked by DNA.

Hi again. I looked closer and rejected that match: John Conklin-242 and his wife Helena were married in 1660 and had a child in 1670 (according to the profiles). John Conklin-228 and his wife Sarah had son Nicholas in 1661. Sarah died in 1688. So, unless John was a bigamist...

Hi! Steve Moray proposed a merge with Conklin-228, but I'm not a profile manager so I didn't receive any message he might have included with the merge proposal. I don't see similarity beyond name and approximate birth year. If John's from a large local family, it's likely he has cousins with the same name and about the same age. Do you have any information to add that might help shed light on whether this John m Helena was the same or a different John than Conklin-228 who married Sarah Horton? Thanks, Liz
