Biography

May was born on 18 May 1885. She was the daughter of Robert Connell and Ann (Webster) Connell. May's birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1885 in the Gainsborough district.^[1]

In the 1911 census May (age 26), School Teacher (elementary), was the single sister of Robert Connell in Highfield Gainsborough, Gainsborough, England.^[2]

When May was 28 she married John Webster Nicholson on 28 January 1914 in All Souls, Langham Place, Westminster, England. They had 3 children.^{[3] [4]}

May and their 2 daughters departed Liverpool on 10 February 1919 for New York aboard the Royal George to join John who was working in America as an engineer.This was the maiden voyage of the ship and it travelled to New York via Halifax, Nova Scotia. The ship was nicknamed Rolling George. Royal George, Cunard Line^[5]

In the 1920 census May (age 33) was the wife of John W Nicholson in Pasadena, Los Angeles, California.^[6]

Son John was born in around September 1920.

May's husband John died on 21 Mar 1921.

In August 1921 May and her 3 children along with nursemaid Eliza Pearson returned to England aboard the White Star ship Olympic, arriving 20 August in Southampton. Their destination address was Willoughton Manor, near Lincoln. ^[7]

Daughter Hazel died in 1922.

May was registered to vote in 1925 in Letchworth, Hertfordshire, England.^[8]

In the 1939 register May, Unpaid Domestic Duties, was widowed at 8 "cranford" Sottershott E Sollershott West, Letchworth, Letchworth U.D., Hertfordshire, England.^[9]

In 1977 May was living at Garega, 26a Greenhill, Weymouth, Dorset. This was a self contained annex in the grounds of daughter Joan & son-in-law Gordon's house.

May died on 25 February 1981 and was cremated on 2 March 1981 in Lincolnshire, England. May's death was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1981 in the LIincoln district.^[10][11]
