William was born in 1818 in the Clones area in County Monaghan, Ireland. He was the son of James Connelly and Sarah McPhillips. His family emigrated to America in about 1829 and settled to farm in North Greece in Monroe County, New York. In 1839 at the age of 21, he married Ann 'Nancy' Beattie there in Greece. They had five children together, one of whom died young, before Nancy died in 1853. William remarried three years later in 1856 to Ellen Burns. William and Ellen had nine more children together. The family farm was located on Janes Road near Island Cottage Road just a mile away from Latke Ontario. Under William, the farm evolved from a log cabin to a large farmhouse. William kept a diary which has survived in which he recorded the events over the decades from the 1830s to the 1890s. He died of bronchitis in 1896 in North Greece at the age of 78. William is buried with his wives and several of their children in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery in Greece, New York.
