Biography

Louisa Jane Conner was baptised on 10 December 1863, in Holy Trinity Church, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. [1]

She may have left her first husband, and returned to Adelaide. No children have been found from this marriage.

Louisa may not have married her second partner Edward or Edwin Carter. No record has been found. He is named as the father of her two daughters, Lilly May and Ethel Maud Carter.

Again, she left her partner, Edwin Carter, and married George Rowe, or Rowland. My sister found information on Ancestry, from another contributor, who knew of Louisa Rowlands in her Family Tree.

The documentation, including Louisa's Death Certificate, shows all the connections with Nash, Carter & Rowe, albeit not it the historical order in which I found my information. [2]

To sum up, Louisa Jane Conner's life was a difficult one. Her mother died when she was 14, and she had to 'seek her fortune' as best she could. She appeared in a remote country town, and married an older man. She left him, and lived with a Catholic man, who could not marry her. Many people did not seek divorces in these times, because it was stigmatised, and also extremely expensive to acquire. So she was married twice; had no children by either husbands, but her only adult daughter, Lilly May Carter, made a good life for herself and her family.
