Biography

Ireland Native
Margaret (Connors) Long was born in Ireland.
This profile is part of the Sporthouse, Waterford One Place Study.

Margaret was born on 9th November 1869.[1] She was the eldest child of James O'Connor and Catherine Power. She was baptised in Ballybricken parish, Waterford, on 14th November 1869. [2]

The memoirs of her nephew, Seamus O'Connor, state that Margaret "was a prominent supporter of the nationalist cause".[3] On 25th January 1891, Margaret married James Kearney, a painter. [4] They lived at Spring Garden Alley, Waterford and seven known children were born to them, some of whom died as infants. Sadly, James Snr. died on 19 March 1903 at the age of 33 from phthisis, leaving Margaret to raise the children.

On 7th January 1907, Margaret married again to John Long, a labourer, who had been a lodger in her house. They continued to live at Margaret's previous home in Spring Garden Alley, Waterford.[5] They had three known children together: Margaret Mary (Dot), Joseph (Sonny) and Ellen (Nellie).

Margaret died from heart failure on 20th September 1936.[6] She is buried next to her parents in the cemetery at Dunhill Church, Co. Waterford (see left of the twin headstones in the image on this profile).
