'OBITUARY James Owen Conrad
Old friends on the water front and fellow fishermen were shocked to hear of the sudden passing early Monday morning of Capt. James O. Conrad in the fifty-fifth year of his age. He was the son of Anne and the late Benjamin Conrad and was born at Eagle Head in Queen County. He began going to sea when a lad of thirteen. Thirty-two years ago he married Ethel, daughter of Ada and the late William Conrad of Liverpool. They spent the first few years of their marriage at Eagle Head and later moved to Liverpool where they have resided ever since. To them were born eight children, six of whom survive. Three daughters, Evelyn (Mrs. Owen Garber), Eleanor (Mrs Walter Wells) , Edith (Mrs Francis Garber at home), and three sons Vernon, James and Merle all living at home. Throughout his long career at sea, Capt. Conrad filled every post from cabin boy to Captain and passed many thrilling adventures. Seventeen years ago when in command of the fishing schooner, "Ida Cunningham", she became disabled at sea and a passing steamer removed Capt. Conrad and his crew, landing them in Scotland. His health has never been the same since and when striken with pneumonia a week or so before his death, he quickly succumbed. Besides his sorrowing wife and children, there are left to mourn, his widowed mother at Eagle Head, four sisters, Mrs. George Kriss of California, Mrs Robert Newel of Atlantic Mass., and the other sister Residing at Malden Mass.,, Mrs. Howard Fraelic of Eagle Head and three brothers, Howard of Belmont, Mass., John and Lew at home. The burial service on Tuesday afternoon from his late home was conducted by Rev. Canon E.B. Spurr with internment in the Church of England Cemetary. The very large attendance of his fellow workers and neighbours testified to the general esteem in which the deceased was held. His daughter Evelyn, Mrs O. Garber arrived home in time for the service. Ethel Conrad brought nearly 300 black children into the world as a midwife.'
