Biography

Jacobus [James] Gonsales aka Jacobus Consales, Jacobus Consales-Duk 1734 - 1787

Name

Name: Jacobus /Consales/ (Hoes: K:4296)

Birth

Jacobus is assumed to be the child of Emmanuel Consales and Remerich Quik who was baptized in Raysester (Rochester), Ulster County, New York, on 10 February 1734 with witnesses Jacobus Quik and Francisca Consales. The baptism was recorded in the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, New York. The first name of the child is not in the record because the page was torn.[1] The probable location of birth and actual baptism was Mametkating, Ulster County, New York. This family had resided in the Minisink area and removed to Memecating.

The town of Mamakating was organized on March 7, 1788 and was the first township of Sullivan County. The first county seat was Bloomingburg; incorporated in 1833. According to historical records Johanis Hardenburgh, a resident of Kingston, N.Y., purchased a large tract of land known as the Hardenburgh Patent. This land and another patent known as the Minisink Patent were what is now most of Orange and Sullivan Counties. On December17th, 1743 a precinct was formed called Mamakating. Some say it was called Mamacotten. It included what is now all of Sullivan County but was still a part of Ulster County.

Research Notes

Notes for Jacobus James Gonsales: Jacobus Gonsales, a brother of Daniel, was one of the persons referred to as uniting with the Machackemech Church. He was arrested by the British as a spy, or for some military offence, and sentenced to be shot. His brother Samuel and one of the Westbrooks interceded and his life was spared. He, as well as some other members of this family, in the language of Quinlan, "hated kings as if they were panthers."

Jacobus and Sara came to Juniata, Mifflin County in 1774. Note: April 6, 1795, the farm of Jacobus Gonzales, in Mifflin (formerly Cumberland) Co., PA, was sold by his heirs. Deed signed by James Gonsaulus, Agnes Gonsaulus, Sarah Gonsaulus, Jonathin Hawit, Sarah Hawit.

Jacobus Gonzales, the father in-law of James Macklin's eldest daughter, was a Spaniard who bought of Marshall Stanley, about the year 1776, a farm of 230 acres, originally warrented in 1774 by Adam Coon, and bought by Stanley a year or two later.

Dying in 1787, Mr. Gonzales left his property to his wife and family; the executors sold the farm; it was purchased by John Vance, and is now owned by the heirs of Elisha Bratton.

Jacobus Gonzales was interred in one of the fields under a large oak. (Walnut tree still standing, 1928 where he is said to have been buried---Col. Ira Fravel). A part of the dwelling on this farm is the original log house, now entirely covered with weather-boarding;it is a good and substantial structure, and was a sort of little fortress in the troublous days of Indian depredations. It was strong and easily defended, and became a refuge for the neighbors in case of alarms; besides, it commanded a view of three defiles, which were Indian trails. There were port-holes in the upper story, whcih twenty five years ago were still to be seen, but which are now entirely concealed.
