On 6 June 1841, Mercy (11 months; with her parents and four siblings: Thomas, 12; Mary, 10; Rebecca, 6; Ruth, 4), was living in Grosvenor Cottages at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. ^{[4] [5]}

During the next few years, both of Mercy's parents and an older sister had died and her older brother had been transported to colonial Australia.

On 7 April 1861, Mercy (20, nurse) was a nurse, in Harbourne Hall (in the house of John BINGESS), at Edgbaston, Warwickshire, England. ^[6]
