Bridget Conway was born about 1860 in Bohaun, Ballovey, Mayo, Ireland, the daughter of Michael Conway and Mary McHale [1]

Marriage and Family

Bridget marries James McGing about 1880 in Ireland

The 1901 Irish Census shows Bridget (41) is living with her husband, James (40), and 4 children; Michael (20), Kate (15), James (12) and John (7). They are living in House 12 in Kinnewry, County Mayo.[2]

The 1911 Irish Census shows Bridget (54) is still living with her husband, James (56), and 2 children; John (22) and Thomas (10). They are living in House 12 in Kinnewry, County Mayo.[3]

On the 3 US Census Records that Bridget appears, her immigration year is listed between 1890 and 1892 [1910=1892, 1920=1890 and 1930=1891]. Family history states that Bridget came to the US and worked to earn money to bring her children to the US.[4] Bridget also appears on the 1901 and 1911 Irish Census, so the mystery remains. At this time, no evidence has been found of Bridget's time in Philadelphia between 1890 and 1904.

On 28 Jul 1904, According to the ship manifest, Bridget and her daughter Kate boarded the S.S. Haverford in Queensland, Ireland.[5] Queensland is located in county Cork and was renamed to Cobh around 1916. Cobh is one of the major transatlantic Irish ports, the town was the departure point for 2.5 million of the six million Irish people who emigrated to North America between 1848 and 1950.[6] Bridget and Kate arrive in Philadelphia on 7 Aug 1904.[5] Bridget's sister Mary (Conway) Moran met them at the dock when they arrived. Mary's address is listed as 2237 South 6th Street in Philadelphia, The manifest states that Bridget's sister Mary called for them at the landing.[5]

In America, it will be 2 more years until Bridget and Kate are reunited with James and Michael, who both emigrated will emigrated in 1906; and later John who will emigrate in 1913. In 1906. the will all live at 726 Tree Street in Philadelphia, PA, Kate's marriage record[7] (24 Jun 1909) and the 1910 US Census shows they are living together at 726 Tree Street in Philadelphia,[8]

The 1920 US Census p1 and 1920 US Census p2 shows that Bridget is living with her son Michael and his family, at 2411 South Alder Street in the city.[9] Michael's brother-in-law Patrick is also staying with them.[9]

The 1930 US Census and 1940 US Census both show Bridget still living with Michael's family. Sometime between 1920 and 1930, Michael's family in living at 260 Fox Run Road in Deptford, New Jersey.[10][11]

Death and Burial

On 19 Jun 1938, Bridget dies at the age of 63 while living with daughter Kate (McGing) McGinn and her family at 607 Highland Avenue, Chester, PA.[1] Bridget is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, Pennsylvania.[1]
