Biography

Reuben is the son of William Cook and Rebecca (Jones) Cook. Reuben was "likely" born before 1706 , since he was deeded land on 20 Sep 1727, it is likely that he was at least 21:

Reuben Cook's mother, Rebecca (Jones) Cook, is also proved by the same deed:

Surry Co., VA, DB/WB 7, p. 753, 20 Sep 1727: “William Cook of Southwarke Parish and wife, Rebecca Cook, to William Briggs of the same for Love and Affection for their sons James Cook and Reuben Cook. 200 acres in Southwarke Parish which was devised to the said Rebecca Cook by the will of her father, James Jones, decd., dated 6 Apr 1719. Wit: Thomas Eldridge. Rec. 20 Sep 1727.” [1]
James Jones' 6 Apr 1719 will names "daughter Rebecca - 200 acres of land in Surry County." [2]
James Cook deeded his part of the land to Reuben in 1740. (Hopkins, Deeds and Estates, 1734-1755, Surry County.)
Surry Co., VA, DB/WB 9, p. 237, 17 Nov 1740: “James Cook and wife, Mary Cook, to Reuben Cook. 100 acres (being part of 200 acres in Albemarle Parish which was devised to Rebecca Cook by the will of her father, James Jones, decd., dated 6 Apr 1719 and by Rebecca Cook and her husband, William Cook, devised to the said James Cook on 20 Sep 1727. The 200 acres was where the said William Cook had ‘his Mansion House and Orchards.’). Wit: John Mason, Joseph Mason, Edward Pettway. Rec. 19 Nov 1740. [3]

Research Notes

As of 6 Nov 2021, this Reuben Cook (Cooke-2146) was shown married to Bethia (Rich) Cook of New England. This does not appear to be correct. Reuben was married to Ann(e) Unknown from at least 1741 (which is the first recording of their children in the Albemarle Parish Register of Surry Co. & Sussex Co., VA). He was still married to Ann(e) when he named her as his wife in his will, written 23 Jun 1764, Sussex Co., VA.

The following New England sources were given for this Reuben Cook:

  • Connecticut, Church Record Abstracts, 1630-1920
  • Early Connecticut Marriages
  • The New England Historical & Genealogical Register, 1847-2011

I have detached Bethia (Rich) Cook as the wife of this Reuben Cook and removed the sources.

This Reuben Cook of Virginia was also shown as the father of:
• Samuel Cook, b. 19 Nov 1758, Middletown, Hartford, CT - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cooke-4746
• Uraney Cooke, b. 31 Jan 1762, CT - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cooke-4747

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Reuben by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Reuben:
