Biography

Lou (aka Vernia) was born in 1901. She is the daughter of William Cook and Nancy Britt. By 1910, the family had moved to Bienville Parish, Louisiana.[1] The family was still in Bienville Parish, Louisiana, in 1920.[2]

She married Bonnie F Carter. In 1920, they were living in Jonesboro, Jackson, Louisiana. Her father, William Cook, was living with them.[3] Her father was still with them in 1930.[4] By 1940, they were still living in Jonesboro, Jackson, Louisiana.[5] They had five children (Damon, Obediah, Willie, Charles, and daughter, Martiel) and a lodger in the home. Her husband, Bonnie, was a funeral director for a funeral home.

Vernia passed away in 1972. Burial was in the Jonesboro Cemetery in Jonesboro, Jackson Parish, Louisiana.[6]

NOTE: Her given name is spelled a variety of ways on various documents including Lou Venia, Louverna, Levernie, Verna, and Vernia. Vernia is the name of her tombstone.
