Midshipman Nathaniel Cook RN was the second son of British explorer and naval officer Captain James Cook RN and his wife Elizabeth Batts. He was born on 14 December 1764 in the hamlet of Mile End Old Town, in the parish of Stepney in London's east end.[1][2] He was baptised at St Dunstan, Stepney, on 8 January 1765.[2]
He followed in his father's and eldest brother's footsteps, becoming an officer the Royal Navy.[1][3]
He died on 3 October 1780, aged 15, serving on board HMS Thunderer in the West Indies. HMS Thunderer, under the command of Captain Boyle Walsingham, foundered in a hurricane off the coast of Jamaica with the loss of all 617 lives on board.[1][3][4][5]
