Biography

If he was the son of John Cooke Jr. alias Hooper ( Hooper-4570 ) and Rachel Daubney ( Daubney-71 ), then he is the Nathaniel Cooke baptized on 20 March 1620/21, Crewkerne, Somersetshire, England. He was married on 29 June 1649, Windsor, Connecticut, to Lydia Vore (who was also from Crewkerne). He died at Windsor on 19 May 1688.

Parents

Since genetic testing has shown that Aaron Cooke was not Nathaniel's father (see below), the only likely alternative is that found in Volume 19 of "Search for the Passengers of the Mary & John 1630", which has an article suggesting that Nathaniel Cooke was possibly the Nathaniel Cooke baptized on 20 March 1620/21 at Crewkerne, Somersetshire , the son of John Cooke Jr (alias Hooper) and Rachel Daubney.

Nathaniel would therefore have probably known the Vore family (parents of his future wife) when he was growing up at Crewkerne. He would have been a younger first cousin of Rev. John Warham who was also born in Crewkerne and also eventually ended up in Windsor, Connecticut. Since Nathaniel's presumed father died when he was just a baby, his prospects in England may not have been good, and joining his cousin John Warham in Connecticut may have been his best option.

In Anderson's Great Migration Begins profile of Aaron Cooke, he writes: "Pope also gives Aaron an oldest child Nathaniel, but Nathaniel Cooke of Windsor married in 1649, which would make him too old to be a son of Aaron.)"[1]

Genetic Evidence

There is now genetic evidence that Nathaniel Cooke was not related to Aaron Cooke at all. Aaron is in Haplogroup I1, and Nathaniel is in Haplogroup R1b. Source: Cook/Cooke/Koch DNA Project Results https://www.familytreedna.com/public/cook/default.aspx?section=yresults

Williamson's "Big Tree" now has one of our Cookes (Kit No. 297627) and narrows down Nathaniel's haplogroup to R-FGC18229, a subclade of R-FGC13899, etc. Source: The Big Tree clade FGC13899 http://ytree.net/DisplayTree.php?blockID=168 .

Marriage and children

He married Lidia Vore 29 Jun 1649 and had the following children:[2]

  1. Sara 28 Jun 1650
  2. Lidia, 9 Jan 1652/53
  3. Hanna, 21 Sept 1655

  5. Abigail, 1 March 1659/60

I have created a profile for another child (Lydia).

And since the evidence linking him to the Cooke family of Crewkerne is circumstantial, I have removed those parents until more concrete evidence can be found.

I could not find any profile for their son Josiah Cooke, so I have started a profile for him (which will need further work).

I have created a profile for John Cooke Jr. alias Hooper, and connected him as "uncertain" father of Nathaniel.

John Cooke Jr. alias Hooper is apparently a younger brother of Agnes (Cooke) Warham, and there was already a profile for her and her parents. Nathaniel Cooke would therefore be a first cousin of Rev. John Warham of Windsor.

UPDATE: See question about this on G2G (where I discuss some pertinent evidence).

The genetic evidence pretty clearly shows Nathaniel Cooke was not related to Aaron Cooke (they are from completely different haplogroups).

Many trees make Nathaniel Cooke the son of John Cooke and Rachel Daubeny, who were married 21 Oct 1602, Crewkerne, Somersetshire, England. Is there any evidence that they are the parents of Nathaniel Cooke (of Windsor, Conn.)?

Cook-15416 and Cooke-2621 appear to represent the same person because: Same vitals. Disconnect father Aaron. Anderson points out that Pope was wrong. Nathaniel too old to be Aaron's son. Sources on Cook. Also Cooke was the spelling used most often by Nathaniel. Thank you.
