Biography

MERRITT TODD COOKE, Jr, son of Merritt Todd Cooke,Sr & Mary Elizabeth Dickson, was born in Norfolk,Virginia, 19 years after the American Civil War on Oct 24,1884 (Chester A Arthur's 4th year as 21st U.S.President). He married, June 30,1917, Beatrice Virginia Crawford, his wife for almost 50 years. He died, probably in Norfolk, age 82, on June 07,1967, during the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War (Lyndon B Johnson's 4th year as 36th President). Merritt Cooke, Jr is buried in Norfolk's Elmwood Cemetery.

M.T. graduated from Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, with a degree in engineering. He worked for the General Electric Company in Schenectady, New York, before World War I. When he returned from the war, he worked as a stock broker for Brown Brothers Harriman and continued in this field until his retirement.

He was a large and strong man, but also a very gentle man. He had beautiful manners and was extremely courteous, polite and considerate. He had been a very good football player at the University of Virginia and was named to the All-Southern team. He coached the only undefeated team Virginia has ever had. He maintained an interest in athletics all his life and loved canoeing, especially white-water canoeing.

He enjoyed working in his vegetable garden and chopping wood. He collected stamps and prints - mostly of Virginia - and loved fine silver and antique furniture. After his retirement, he started making furniture in his cellar workshop. Unfortunately, he cut off part of two fingers while working with one of his power tools.

He was completely honest and genuine without any pretenses. He was much beloved and respected by men and women of all ages. He lived in Philadelphia most of his married life, but his heart was always in Virginia. [1]
