Biography

Hannah Cook(e) was born on March 3, 1786 in Meduncook (now Friendship), Lincoln (now Knox) County, Province (now State) of Maine. She was the daughter of Zenas Cooke and Hannah Bradford.

Hannah married Captain James Morton on February 7, 1811. She was his 2nd wife. They had several children including Elijah Cook, Almira, Silas A., William J., James, and Washington.

In Friendship's 1850 Fed. Census, the household of Hannah (age 63) and husband James (age 66) includes 4 members: themselves plus James (age 25) and Washington (age 21). Located on each side of Hannah and James's residence is Elijah C. Morton (age 38) and his household on one side and William J. Morton (age 31) and his household on the other.

Hannah (age 72) and husband James (age 78) are enumerated in the 1860 Fed. Census for Friendship, Maine. Included in their household of 4 and in addition to themselves are Washington (age 31) and Marguerite ( age 24) Morton, both indicated as married for one year and married apparently to each other.

In Friendship's 1870 Fed. Census, Hannah (age 84) is a member of Washington Morton's (age 30) household, Washington being her son, his household including four children (Lorenzo age 9, Georiana age 7, Morris age 3, and Albert W. age 1). Of Note, Elijah Morton (age 58, a fisherman) and his household members are living adjacent to Washington's household, Elijah being Hannah's eldest son.

Per Friendship's 1880 Fed. Census Hannah is age 94 and a member of the household of Margaret Morton, a widow, likely a daughter-in-law.

Hannah, a widow, passed away at the age of 97 on May 21, 1884 in Friendship. She and her husband, Capt. James, are buried in the "Zenas Cook Lot" at the Old Village Cemetery in Friendship, Knox, Maine.
