FRIEND'S LICENSE Special Marriage Certificate Issued to Dillsburg Couple.

Clerk of the Courts Little of York county, has granted a license to marry according to the Friend's ceremony to Robert L. Cook and Elsie M. Lear, both of Dillsburg. It is only the second license of this kind issued in York county in four years. The license is issued under an act of assembly of June 23, 1885, and differs from the ordinary marriage license in that, instead of authorizing the contracting couple to marry in accordence with the rights of the church or society of their choice the clerk issues a certificate setting forth that by information furnished him "there is no legal impediment to joining yourself in marriage."

My Neighbors & I.

Robert L. Cooke, son of William R. & Mary V. Cooke, was born in York County Pennsylvania near Dillsburg Pa. in the year of 1885 and the 7th day of November.

To locate Dillsburg, it is on the highway leading from Harrisburg to Gettysburg, 14 miles from the former and 24 miles from the latter.

My birth place was on a hundred - twenty two [acre] farm, one that has been in the hands of Cooke's for over ? years. The first man to own the place was the emigrant Peter Cooke from Cheshire, England.

I worked and played on the farm till I was 16. Then went to the southern part of York Co. to take charge of a school, which I taught. After my first year there I was transfered to Northern York Co., where I taught two years more, one a grade country school, the next a [unindel] grammer school. From here I went to West Chester State Normal School, and after two years, I accepted a teaching job at George School, Bucks Co., Pa. and I stayed there for the next twenty-five years.

While there I taught mostly math. Coached Tennis team, Swimming team, Baseball team, and Soccor. The Soccor team was in my hands for sixteen years.

It was during this time I met Miss Elsie Mae Lear, and in 1919 we were married at her home in Lahaska, Pa., on the 23rd of August.

Before our marriage we spent many very pleasent times in my canoe on the Neshaming and parties at the Bungalow of the [Pinochle] Club. The cabin was known as [Faraway] Lodge. We took part in many plays, the biggest being "The Girls of Barnstapool", another was "Grandma Gills of the Red Cross".

We lived in an apartment at George School following our marriage and it was here that our son was born Robert L. Cooke, Jr. In a year we bought a home in Newtown (240 S. Chancellor) where we now live and it was here that Barbara Ann Cooke was born.

During the summer of [*1927] we helped to build a Summer Hotel on "Bon Hill", near Buck Hill and at the same time we were invited to live on the Campus of George School, which we did till 1933, when we returned to our home in Newtown.

Before I was married I spent most of my time in York Co., but during my early years at George School, I spent 1 summer at State College, two summers at Harvard, two summers at University of Penna. Then I taught two summers at University of Penna. and during a prolonged vacation one spring, my good friend Norman W. Swayne and I took a trip to Bermuda and had a lovely 12 days on the island, and at another spring vacation I spent the time with very good friends Mr. & Mrs. Schnieder, at their home in Pierce, Florida, from here [unintel] ...I visited Tampa Jacksonville & St. Augustine.

On our "Honey Moon" we traveled by car up through the Northern part of Penna., stopping in Wyoming, Scranton, Eagle Mere, Hazelton, etc.

We are now living at 240 S. Chancellor St. and we are always very happy to have our good neighbors stop in to see us.

240 S. Chancellor St, Newtown, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, home of Robert & Elsie Cooke from 1922 til November 1968. Sold to Donald Louise Hunnell. In the 1950's, the old wall paper in the front hall was being replaced and written on the wall under the old paper:

"M. A. Buckman (Paper Hangers) May 11, 1897"

"F. E. Walker Deputy (April 7, 1897)"
