Mary Cooke was born about May 1782 in Chawleigh, Devon, England to William Cooke and Joan his wife. She was christened in Chawleigh on June 18, 1792[1].
Marriage & Children
Mary, now going by the name Maria married James Ponsford in Chawleigh on September 21, 1812. They were married after Banns, he a bachelor and she a spinster by James May (curate). Witnesses were William Cooke and Joseph Braden[2].
It is unknown how many children Maria and James had. There is only one known record of the christening of a child of the couple:
Living (apparently as a widow) in the household of William Snell in East Ford[4]. (See research notes)
1851:
Living in the household of her son Richard at Ford[5].
Death & Burial
Maria died in November 1858 and was buried on Chawleigh on November 12, 1858[6].
Research Notes
The 1841 census shows Maria living in the household of William Snell. As of 2021-12-18 no relation has been derived between William and Maria although he might be a son-in-law. However her entry on the record is directly above the entry for her son Richard and his family, so it is possible that this could be a transcription error on the part of the enumerator and she is actual living in the household of her son. Further evidence of this possible error is the fact that she is living with her son Richard in the 1851 census.
