Biography

Birth

Born: About 1602.
She is sometimes speculated to be the unnamed daughter of William Cooke baptized July 1611 at Crediton. However, this is very unlikely as she would only have been 15 years old at her marriage. It is more likely that the 1611 birth date belongs to Mary Cooke who was named in the will of her aunt, Mary Terry. As the first named daughter in the will of her father she was likely the oldest and born sometime before Samuel who was baptized 13 Jan 1604/5 at Crediton. See the profile of her father.

Marriage

Married: Rev. William Walton on 10 April 1627 at Holy Trinity in Dorchester, co. Dorset, England. [1]
Children of Rev. William Walton and Elizabeth Cooke:[2] [3][4]
  • John Walton. Born 6 April 1627 at Seaton, co. Devon, England. Baptized at Seaton April 16, 1628. No further record
  • Elizabeth Walton. Born 27 October 1629 at Seaton.
  • Martha Walton. Born 26 April 1632 at Seaton.
  • Jane Walton bp. Seaton 8 Feb 1634/5. no further record.[4]
  • Nathanial Walton. Born 3 March 1636 at Hingham, Essex Co., Massachusetts.
  • Samuel Walton. Born 5 June 1639 at Marblehead, Essex Co., Massachsuetts.
  • Josiah Walton. Born 20 December 1641 at Marblehead.
  • Mary Walton. 14 May 1644 at Marblehead.

Death

Died: 1682 in Marblehead, Essex, Massachusetts.[citation needed]
Burial: Elizabeth may have been buried in the Old Burial Hill Cemetery in Marblehead, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA.[5]

Notes

In the will of her aunt Mary Terry, she is named among Mary's nieces as Elizabeth Walton. [1]
She married. the Rev. William Walton MA (c1600-1668). He was a graduate of Emmanuel College Cambridge where he was awarded his BA in 1621/2 and MA in 1625. He joined the church being ordained a deacon at Bristol on 22nd Sep 1621 and appointed curate of Beer & Seaton. In 1627 the existing vicar of Seaton, the Rev Henry Paynter, who was well known to John White, removed to St Petrock's in Exeter leaving William Walton as curate in charge. Elizabeth and William Walton were then married at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester by her brother Rev. John White on 10th April 1627 and she moved to Seaton to live.

Magna Carta Project

Elizabeth (Cooke) Walton is not listed in Douglas Richardson's Magna Carta Ancestry but has been identified by the Magna Carta Project as a Gateway Ancestor (vol. I, pages xxiii-xxix) in a Richardson-documented trail to Magna Carta Surety Barons Hugh le Bigod and Roger Bigod. This trail, set out here on her mother's profile, has not yet been developed on WikiTree by the Magna Carta Project.

I'm not sure the Mary listed is correct. This appears to be the correct Mary. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/34367446/mary-burley_kimball

[replaces an earlier answer which I have deleted - this answer reflects further research]

I believe you may have misread FindAGrave.

What FindAGrave shows is Mary Burley as a granddaughter of the Elizabeth of this profile, not a daughter. Mary Burley's parents are shown on FindAGrave as Lot Conant and Elizabeth Walton-242, daughter of the Elizabeth of this profile and her husband William Walton. The FindAGrave entry for Mary Burley does not give Mary's last name at birth as Walton but as Conant. The FindAGrave entry for Mary Burley's mother is at https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/34161817/elizabeth-conant_mansfield. What FindAGrave says is consistent with what is currently shown on WikiTree. Mary Burley has a WikiTree profile: Mary (Conant) Burley.

The Elizabeth of this profile did have a daughter Mary but it was a different Mary, whose married name is Bartlett. This is confirmed by court documents relating to the administration by Elizabeth of the estate of her husband William Walton: in these documents her daughters were named, and one of them was Mary Bartlett. This information comes from Anderson's Great Migration, the first inline citation given on this profile, which goes on to give further information about Mary (Walton) Bartlett.

By the way, FindAGrave is not in general regarded as a reliable source for pre-1700 profiles. Though it can be a helpful pointer for research.

Thank you! I followed my line wrong when I went down from Lot. I was trying to figure out why my line to Roger is not shown but going down my line I can see Anne Story (1740-1791) is not listed as a child of Stephen Story (1716-1796) and Elizabeth Story( 1718-1791). (Yes they were some type of cousins.)https://acpl.polarislibrary.com/polaris/search/title.aspx?ctx=24.1033.0.0.5&pos=3&cn=1650477

Elizabeth has now been identified as a Magna Carta Gateway Ancestor with at least one line of descent from the Bigod Surety Barons. (She will also be descended from other Surety Barons.) The Magna Carta Project therefore proposes to become a co-manager of this profile. If there are any queries, please contact me.
