Biography

John W S Cooley was born about 1838 in Indiana. John was the first born of Louis Cooley and Mary Maxson. His family lived in Indiana until he was about 3 when they moved to Iowa. His father was a farmer and John had five siblings by the time he married Philena Beer on November 7, 1859 in Appanoose County, Iowa. Together they had 2 children. the lived next door to his father's farm.

He passed away at Millikens Bend, Madison, Louisiana, United States. John was buried in Vicksburg National Cemetery, Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi in plot Sec F, #696.[1]

Registration

John W Cooley was included in the Consolidated Lists of Civil War Draft Registration Records in Pleasant, Appanoose County, of the 4th Congressional District of Iowa. Line 7 records John was 23 on July 1, 1863 and was described as a white farmer who was married and born in Indiana. There was no former military service or remarks listed. If he was born in 1838 then he could have been about 25 on that date.

Civil War

John W S Cooley was assigned to company A of 26th Regiment, Iowa Infantry during the United States Civil War. On September 30, 1962 he was mustered out for three years service and was part of the 3rd briagade, 1st division, XV Corp(Union Army) under Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman serving in the Army of Tennessee under Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. Wikipedia's 26th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment has an summary of the engagements that John may have participated in during the Vicksburg Campaign:

22 December 1862 - 2 January 1863: [ Sherman's Yazoo Expedition] to which Sherman's XV Corp was attached and included the Battle of Chickasaw Bluffs and the Battle of Fort Hindman, Arkansas aka Battle of Arkansas Post.

Wikipedia's article on the Vicksburg Campaign states that Grant "assumed personal command of the campaign on January 13 at Milliken's Bend, 15 miles northwest of Vicksburg." Sherman's men had part in building Grant's Canal located near Young's Point where Sherman's men were on duty between mid January to April of 1863. Young's Point was midway between Milliken's Bend and Vicksburg.

Death

John Cooley was also included in the U.S., Registers of Deaths of Volunteers, 1861-1865 as a private in Regiment 26 Company A. He passed away May 2, 1863 at Milliken's Bend[1] in the regiment hospital. At any point while John was on duty at Young's Point he could have become ill and began his stay in the regiment hospital at Milliken's Bend. The day John passed away the Confederates were forced to retreat into the Bayou Pierre bottom leaving hundreds of prisoners behind the day after the Union forces engaged in the Battle of Fort Gibson which occurred more than a month before the Battle of Milliken's Bend on June 7, 1863. That was before the date on the draft registration record.

First Burial

J. S. Cooley was "Orig.bur. Levee, Judge Byrne's plantation, 100 yards west of house, Millikens Bend, Louisiana". "The U.S. National Cemetery Interment Control Forms, 1928-1962 also stated that John was a corporal in Company A of Regiment 26 of Iowa. He passed away May 2, 1863.[1] John's Grave Mark is section F Grave 696.

Honor Roll

John S Cooly's listing on the U.S., Civil War Roll of Honor, 1861-1865 is Number 1511 on page 49 listing Union Soldiers Interred in VIcksburg National Cemetery, Mississippi where his remains were relocated. The record records John was a Corporal in Company A of the 26th infantry of the state of Iowa. It is not known at what point that John's rank was changed to corporal. He passed away on May 2,1863 at Milliken's Bend, Louisiana.[1] He is now buried in Section F Grave 45.
