KEYPORT PHYSICIAN DIES ON BRONXVILLE DR. HERBERT S. COOLEY STRICKEN PRACTICED LOCALLY OVER 50 YEARS
Dr. Herbert Sutherland Cooley, 80, a practicing physician and surgeon in Keyport for over 50 years died suddenly Wednesday morning, Apr 14, 1954 at the Lawrence Hospital, Bronxville, NY. Dr. Cooley had been visiting his daughter, Mrs. Catherine Fitzell. He was born in Pawling, NY son of of the late George Frederick and Catherine Theresa Cooley. He attended Peekskill Military Academy and studied law at Columbia College, NY before he decided to enter the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia. Before his graduation, he married the late Miss Elizabeth Nash Avery at Peekskill in the year 1896.
Following graduation he practiced in New York, near Newburgh, then came to New Jersey and began practice in Perth Amboy. His first location in Keyport was his house and office on Front Street on the bank overlooking the Raritan Bay. This building, which he sold 11 years ago to move into smaller quarters, was gutted by fire a fortnight ago. Until a month ago Dr. Cooley resided at 8 Main St, Keyport in the home recently purchased by Seymour Pappas. He is survived by two daughters. Internment Rose Hill.
Not mentioned in his obituary is that Dr. Cooley was the attending physician to the young Stanley Fisher who was killed in the now famous white shark attack in Matawan Creek in 1916.
