Biography

Leroy C. "Roy" Cooley, son of George Cornelius Cooley and Lavona Bell Mace, was born in Iowa, United States, in about 1901.[2] In the decade after his birth, in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, two siblings were born: Hugh, 8 Feb 1903,[3] and Chloe, 3 Dec 1906.[4]

Roy's family, including his two elder siblings (Marion, born in Missouri in about 1896,[5] and Dewey, born in Trenton, Missouri, in 1898.[6]), moved to Colorado. In 1910, the family of seven were farming in Idalia Precinct 10, Yuma County, Colorado.[7] Two doors down resided Roy's recently-widowed maternal grandmother and three maternal aunts and one maternal uncle,[7] and on either side of them, living alone, two more maternal uncles, all farming.[7] While the family was in Yuma County, Roy's brother, Eli, was born, 8 Jan 1911,[8] followed by his sister, Louise, 11 Dec 1913.[9] They moved west, relocating to Larimer County, Colorado, where, 8 Jan 1917, the last of Roy's siblings, Estelle, was born.[10] In 1920, the family (sans Marion) resided in Larimer County's Bellevue, on Poudre Canon Road.[11]

Roy lost his mother and sister, Louise, to influenza in 1932, both in Fort Collins, Colorado.[12] Louise succumbed 12 Feb 1932, at age 18,[13] and his mother died twelve days later, at age 54.[14] At the time of their deaths, Roy resided in Denver.[15]
